How to open laptop which is showing non system disk or disk error

Since the OS is WinXP, it could be the hard drive has failed.  Another possiblty, since the model number is not listed, is there is a media in one of the drives.  This could be a DVD, CD, floppy disk or media card left in one of those devices by mistake.  Most likely, on a PC old enough to have WinXP, it is a failed hard drive.
