To reduce noise. if the system is mainly idle (watching a show, downloading stuff, writing a report or whatever) your system isn't pushing the cpu or the gpu. That means temps are cool inside the case and fans (at least 3 in our case) don't need to be on full blast all the time. Less noise and less dust inside the case come to mind as advantages but there might be others.
2 wires make a fan spin (speed is constant)
3 wires make a fan spin (speed is constant), bios knows how fast it is spinning and warns if it fails
4 wires... same as 3 wires plus bios is able to control its speed (cool system = low speed, hot system = higher speed)
the chassis fan has 4 wires so you can see and hear it speed up if temps inside the case go up. The fan inside the original hp psu is a 4 wire fan.
- tach goes to the mboard so that it can read fan speed
- pwm is sent to the fan (a pulsed signal tells the fan how fast it should rotate). If you don't use the 4th wire (pwm or as hp calls it, FAN CMD) the fan rotates at full speed

I will test first, but there shouldn't be any need for a converter. The new 4 wire fan I plan to fit my psu should be powered the same way the old one was (2 wires coming from the psu pcb, 12Vdc and ground), then add two wires to connect PWM (sames as FAN CMD to the 1st pin from the left (shown as cutted on my pic on page 9) and TACH (same as FAN SPEED) to the 2nd pin from the left . Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've seen 4 wire fans have a much higher rpm count on max than most 2 or 3 wire pc fans (where they try to between balance speed and noise). Just my opinion.

How about something like this:
Looks like a ready-made solution (although it's for a different model). It appears to be almost the same as the ones I've seen pictured in previous updates on this thread. Main difference I can see immediately is that there are only 4 wires to the white 6 pin connector.
Has anybody tried one or had a look at one?
Thanks

That's a great find. Although I'm also not sure about the white molex connector.
Even if the wiring is wrong, that's a great place to start and what a time saver it is. My advice is double check all connections and rewire if necessary. I'll help in what I can.
ps. I've seen the manual for the z230 and can't find the pinout for the connectors anywhere. That would help to see if there are differences between the 2 systems.

Ok I've ordered one up and I'm awaiting delivery. It'll probably take weeks to get here but when it does I'll let you know (and will post some detailed pictures if I can). Then we can have a look at what needs adding/changing, if anything.
Cheers

That adapter harness looks really intriguing! I'm really interested to see if it ends up working. I also looked through a couple of manuals for the computer it specifies, but wasn't able to find anything about the wiring.
Keep us posted Barnstormer!
