Repeated attempts to install the following update from HP fails.
Hp Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2AF7)
There is no reason given and no event log to view. I'm left in the dark
with no possible resolution.
This is a reported problem. Some say their problem is fixed, but I don't see any solution that fits my system.
My BIOS Version/Date is AMI 80.12 1/15/2014
My computer:
Product name: 500-277c Serial Number: [moderator edited serial number]
Product number: F3E50AA#ABA Windows 8.1 64-bit

The mystery continues.
I followed the HP Support Assistant installation steps making certain not to touch anything until the system had safely rebooted. (I admit I tried to get the Windows Run Dialog box to close by hitting "ENTER" when I ran the process the first time.) Initially it looked promising, but after a few moments, the alert returned.
If you have more information on this conundrum, please let me know.
P.S. Thank you for editing out my serial number. I naively didn't consider that to be personal information.

We are aware that there is a problem with this update concerning the Memphis S motherboard.
I will advise you when the update is fixed or replaced. Please be patient.

HP has tested the install of the updated BIOS and encountered no problems.
This is the reply I received as the most plausible explanation:
" The point here is "stalling".
That is THE most common thing customers state when telling us the BIOS update failed. They actually are not reading what is on the screen, it says "your system may be unresponsive for 3 to 5 minutes" and that is 100% true. They attempt to reboot and corrupt the install. I've called a few customers back about this (way back when I was in the desktop team) and sure enough that was the case. I've seen very few instances where the BIOS actually update failed. Eventhough that could be the case. "

I am having the same problem. I install the update. It goes thru the process, reboots my system and takes me back to my login page. The Exclamation mark goes away after the install but within a few minutes it shows back up and wants me to install it again.

I too had the same issues - kept telling me that there was an update to install. In the end I got annoyed and ignored it. Now it says it has installed. However, since this has been installed, my 6 month old computer (HP Pavilion 500 Series) is slower and even more strangely my wireless mouse is suddenly very sluggish and erratic (have changed the batteries, restarted it etc. and it is still the same). There have been no other updates on my PC and I have not changed/added/removed anything else which could be the cause of this issue - so what I want to know is - has anyone else experienced this issue and is this a known bug from this update? I am extremely frustrated because everything was working well until this update - the mouse issues are particularly annoying and frustrating!

I am also having similar problems with my Pavilion 500-319na Desktop. I attempted to install the update a few days ago, only to have it fail multiple times and restart without prompts. Ever since then my computer has been acting up: it seems fine on start up but gradually gets slower and slower, any audio I try to listen to starts crackling and breaking up, and multiple times my wireless keyboard fails to connect, causing me to restart until it reconnects. I really hope HP can find a solution soon or I'm going to end up being very behind on university work.

The "Thumbs UP" button says I can't post kudos to this post. I keep getting asked to give kudos to the solution if appropriate. So how do you kudo something if you can't use the button.
BTW, KUDOS anyway.
The problem went away after I installed an unrelated update to my wireless adapter. I checked the HP Assistant screen and it showed the above BIOS Update AND an update to the adapter. I installed the adapter update and the process must have discovered the BIOS update also because the system rebooted and no alerts are now showing on the Assistant. So what-or-whoever caused the update to happen, thank you.

If this has solved your problem, it is great news for you.
However, Windows key + R and type msinfo32
What version of the BIOS is showing?
