Unfortunately we are in the same boat

After spending several days trying all the various "tricks" shown on the board I had pretty much given up on ever getting my envy 23 running. Then I recently checked back on the forum and found a recent procedure to update the bios while the system was not functioning.

The procedure describe by OXiDE (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Envy-20-Black-Screen-On-Startup/td-p...) is not trivial, but does work and has very detailed and complete instructions. it does require the purchase of a small processor card that you should be able to buy for about $11.00 on amazon and some jumpers (also can be purchased on amazon) - my total was under $20.00 using a Elegoo UNO R3 board.

It does require having either a linux machine available or setting up a virtual machine on a working windows computer using vmware or virtualbox (Free versions of both are available) and installing ubuntu.

get VirtualBox here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

get VMware here: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/info?slug=desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation_pro/12_0

My preference is VMWare - workstation is free for non-commercial use. Very easy to setup a virtual machine.

Ubuntu can be downloaded from here: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop - also free.

The Elegoo board seemed a little "flaky" - took me a number of trys to get the Bios code burned - could have been having leads too close together? Afer updating the bios my system immediatly booted up to windows 10 with video again working - been running over a week now without any issues.

does it have to be ubuntu? I have Kali on a thumb drive I could use

I cannot say for sure; but most likely it will work. From what I could see all the apps will run on generic linux/POSIX platforms.

Apparently that procedure only works with the envy 23, and not for the 20, both desktops look alike, but have different motherboards.
And I have the same problem here, back in February the machine worked once, and I didn't knew I had to update the BIOS, so... Well... since then I wasn't able to make it boot again.

So still nothing but every couple of times I switch the jumpers it seems to come all the way back on i can press keys on the keyboard and see the adapter lighting up in back and hdd light going crazy still minus the screen though but then I get a sequence of 5 blinks of the power led on top. Any ideas from anyone? It's weird cause it doesn't happen every time and I'm doing the same thing over and over but getting different results which obviously makes no sense ughhhh

It happened to me several times, after the 5 blinks the keyboard starts working, and pressing F1 the computer boots without display, but the other things works fine, audio, touchscreen, wifi adapter, and runs in a resolution of 640x480 (managed to open Dropbox and sent screenshots to another PC). Tried to update the BIOS "blindly" but got the error that the resolution is too low to open the application.
