That really is not a solution and more of a work around if you're using adaptors. I believe Loaks (and I as well) wanted to be able to switch between the two sources (HDMI and DVI) freely. I am going to try to find another HDMI cable to see if that will work or not to see if it's just the monitor being picky. If not then, I will just exchange it for a working one at Staples.

So, I finally was able to get the HDMI port to work. I unplugged the power cord, plugged in my a new HDMI cable to the monitor's port while leaving the DVI-HDMI cable still plugged in to the DVI port but did not connect that HDMI to anything. So, I turned the monitor on and set it to HDMI in source control. I plugged in the HDMI cable and nothing happened with it displaying "Check Video Cable". The monitor then went to sleep and then instantly powered back on displaying my desktop from my laptop. I then unplugged the new HDMI cable and swapped it for the old one to see if it was the monitor having issues. The old HDMI cable worked now when I plugged it in. Now, I have both the PS3 and laptop connected to thie monitor, and I'm able to switch between these two sources.

One thing to note though is when I switch to the DVI, the monitor only shows the DVI port to be active, but when I swich to HDMI, monitor status shows that both HDMI and DVI are active.

My settings for the source control is Auto-Switch Source is switched OFF, and Default Source is setted to HDMI.

I hope you can replicate what I got Loaks.

Hi,

The monitor reset should have set the Auto Switch Source to the default setting.  On the HP monitors that I use it is set to off.

Agree open case.

I have this monitor.  Doesn't work with 6' HDMI cables. Haven't tried other lengths.  Using a Radeon 5450 based card.  Connect my main monitor to the DVI connector and the 2311 to the HDMI connector. The card's software can see the 2311X (shows up in the list of panels it sees), but the 2311 reports "Check Video Cable".  In this state, none of the display's buttons work... until the monitor sleeps.  You can then get the display to wake up by touching the Source Control button (has + above it). This shows the monitor has selected VGA input (no cable there!). If you are quick you can press the source button and select the HDMI interface, but this doesn't fix anything.

I opened a case via the chat - you need to supply the monitor's serial number and model XP598AA.  Walked the tech through:

1. connected Desktop PC to HDMI input of my TV - works.

2. Moved cable from TV to monitor - doesn't work.

3. Use roommates laptop - connect to PC - works.

4. laptop connected to TV - doesn't work.

They are shipping me a replacement monitor (7 days ground).  We will see if that helps. I doubt it.

Since the video card can identify the monitor via HDMI, there is a connection, but something else is wrong.  I noted that the firmware is v2.04G.  In another thread, someone commented that they had three of this monitors and only one was failing on HDMI i/f.  Could this be a firmware issue in the HDMI handshake?    `

I tried a different HDMI cable. Apparently this monitor is really picky with HDMI cables. When you connect the right kind it prefers, it'll show the HDMI port being ACTIVE. Now I can switch back and forth. The reason why I was able to use my old HDMI cable was because the new one I tried made the HDMI port active so it'll stay active when you switch to another cable.

Thanks for your last post Aesir. I had bought the monitor from Best Buy and returned it a few days ago cause I couldn't get HDMI working. I received the monitor that I ordered from Fry's today and tried and had no luck. Then I saw your latest post and tried a high quality looking HDMI cable and the monitor magically started working. I guess the HDMI port got "activated" as you mentioned. Now any HDMI cable works! Once again, thanks a lot!!!

When I have just the HDMI cable connected and the monitor says check signal cable, I am not able to use any of the buttons to get to the On Screen Display.

How can i switch the input to hdmi if i can't change that?! it's frustrating...

Hi,

I have asked HP to look into the HDMI issues and the HP 2x11x monitors.  Too many are having HDMI issues.

In the mean time, contact HP Support or return the monitor if it is under 21 days since purchase.

Bingo!!  This is the simple little trick that worked.  I too kept getting that notice to check the cable.  I followed your instructions.  Ensure no cables are connected to the monitor at this time.

1.  Power off (unplug) the monitor.

2.  Hold the power button for 30 seconds.

3.  Connect the cable to the processor.

4.  Connect the cable to the monitor.

5.  Plug in the monitor.

6.  Power up the monitor.

7.  Go to the OSD (On screen display) and set it for HMDI.

The only thing I had to do after this was set the sharpness.  It was set, I guess by default too soft.  Sharper was perfect!

Voila!  Within maybe two minutes, i went from very frustrated and wondering what I was doing wrong/did I have a defective something - cable, monitor, card, etc?  Turns out this was the perfect solution and so very easy to fix.

Thank you so much for the information!!!
