I uploaded my photos from my camera for the first time using HP Mediasmart, and now I cannot get them into my normal photo file called, My Pictures. I normally use a windows program to upload to my computer, but thought I would try something new. Now my photos are deleted from my camera, and I cannot get them into my normal photo collection! There is no way to drag or right click or anything! How does this work?

I think I am begining to see what your situation is now.
Yes the manual way of drag n drop may seem not as smooth if your used to a user interface that sorts it automatically.
When I am copying photos over from a job, I have a jobs folder that has sub folders organized alphabetically. These can also be named by Date or whatever YOU want. Inside each of those I have either folders with customers names, dates, locations or what ever the occasion.
This way it is easier for me to track where each set of photos are located.
You can organize a file system that suites you how ever you want. The idea is you know you have them there when you need them. No guessing. I dont recommend putting all photos into just one folder. That would be a nightmare to find them.
If you want to get more into a photo editing and/or organizing program specifically, there are lots out there.
I use Adobe Lightroom which will download the photos from your card reader and place them where you tell it to.
It does extensive photo adjustments as well but its $150 US.
A free alternative to LR is an open source project called LightZone. It imitates most of the Lightroom layout. You have to register on their website first before downloading. I have not used LZ.
These are not for the timid though, they do have a learning curve to them.
I have a relative that will only use Picasa to navigate her photos with because its the only thing she is willing to learn and was easiest for her. ARRG
I hope this helped in some way.
Sorry the other software didnt work out for you.

Hi RoxanneRXR,
What is your camera model and Computer model?
I will assume the camera has either an SD card or Micro SD card that is removable.
First of all, I do not like to connect any camera to my computer to download photo files. I always use a card reader adapter plugged in to a USB port and insert the camera card into it. It saves the camera battery and prevents other issues that can occur. This way, I can navigate to the images just like I do My Pictures folder and drag and drop as I like.
I do not use any third party software to download photos with!!!
I will assume Media Smart created its own folder (maybe under HP) somewhere on your system and put the photos in there.
(I cannot test this as I do not have Media Smart. It does not work on my Windows 8 machine).
If it did not copy the images over to your hard drive, you may still be able to recover your photos from the camera card.
Did you in fact reformat your camera card? If so do not take any pictures with it yet.
IF you don’t know if you reformatted, leave it be until you get a card reader to insert the card into and plug into the computer.
There is a free program called Recuva that can scan the camera card and Un-Delete most of the photos that were on it. You will lose a few due to the reformat.
When you have to ability to plug the camera card into the computer via a card reader, or if your computer has a card reader slot built in, you can see if the images are in fact still there.
If you need to purchase a card reader, most brick and mortar stores carry them like WalMart, Target, Best Buy, etc. etc. (if you are in the USA that is)
I will stop here until I hear back from you

BTW Roxanne:
I was a pro photographer for many years. If you start using the Card Reader with the old fashioned Drag & Drop or Copy/Paste method, you will eliminate the type of problems you are having now. Unless of course your hard drive crashes.
Remember to back up to another drive, DVD or the cloud also. If you have only one copy of your photos, you dont have a copy.
I am not an HP employee. Just offering to help.

I solved the problem of the deleted photos by burning them onto a disk then uploading them directly to my normal photo file in my computer. Fortunately they were not lost.
I have always moved my photos to my computer using a usb directly from the camera to computer with no problem.
my only problem is this program, the HP photosmart
I do not see any way to move my photos from it to my photo files on my computer. Surely I don't have to burn a cd every time I download photos to it and move them that way! I cannot right click images to copy or move or anything. I cannot drag them. I see no instructions on how to move them anywhere. This is a very odd program, which I used just as an experiement because it is on my computer and I thought it might be useful.
Unless someone can tell me how to do this I guess I just won't use it again. I don't want to have to burn a cd every time I need to get my photos to my My Pictures file on my computer!
Thanks for any help you have for me.
I will purchase a card reader adapter. If you are saying you can download right from there to My Pictures, I'm all for it. I have had trouble with Windows Live Photo Gallery, too, with the download process. Can you tell me more about this device?
I apologise, I am off to work soon so my responce time will be spotty.

I have never used a card reader, but I see here from a few folks that it is a good idea. I will be getting one. I was able to save my photos by creating a CD then moving them into my My Pictures folder. But I still haven't figured out how to move images from HP photosmart. I hate to abandon the program without conquering it, but I really don't need it anyway. I am trying to get away from Windows Lie Photo Gallery which is what I use to move photos from my camera to my computer. It saves the images in its own gallery, but they also show up in my My Pictures file, which is what I use to work with them. I just wish I could find a more direct way.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, glad to hear your files were not lost on the card.
I cannot speak for the Media Smart program but...
if you hook your camera up to the computer via a USB cord (we called it teathered), you should be able to go to computer and see the camera listed as a drive.
\Edit: I see you said you have done this before already.
Since I dont use HP cameras, I dont know how their programs are set up. Sorry
I would have the card reader anyway , even if I did get the software working.
Do tell me what computer and camera model you have though, so I know what to recomend for a reader.
Thanks.

My computer is an HP and the cameras are a little Sony Cybershot and a Canon Rebel XTi.
I finally gave up on the HP program, as I cannot get any help or advice from them. They don't seem to be able to offer any!
I wound up taking the memory chip out and plugging it into the computer and download that way now, even though it is not as organized as either the Windows program or the HP Media Smart as far as files go.
I will be deleting my HP programs so they don't take up unessesary space. Too bad!
Seems like there would be instructions somewhere that included this issue, but I have read everything there is available. It's like a computer wrote the manual.

Thank you for your input. I guess I will stick with the manual method. In a way it actually gives me more control.
As far as editing, I bet you will go "argh" with me too, because I use a very simple, free online program called "Ribbet" which I just love! It does not organize my photos, just offers editing tools. It also saves my edited photos for future edits or even changes to edits I've already done, which most free programs don't offer. It used to be called "Picnik" until google+ ate that up and thinned it out, then absorbed what was left of it into Picassa.
Always an adventure here on the computer!
smiles

My pictures were in folders under Pictures, My Pictures and I could click on a folder, open it and click on a photo and at the top of the screen it had EDIT, PRINT, etc. NOW, since my computer crashed and HP reloaded......, my pictures go into the Picture but at the top doesn't show EDIT. It goes into HP MEDIA SMART PHOTO, but I can't make the easy changes now, it's all automatic stuff, not custom like I want it. How do I just get the pictures into Picture folders and EDIT from the top column. Pictures are going into different places. ?????
