OK progress
i got my very very old SandDisk, cruiser, glide 32GB to work , via HP create recovery
but the MS create recover fails.: missing file errors.
does HP block this as a matter of practice? I can see that as true, so HP could force you to backup the bloat ware too.?
that's ok, but needs to be known,
progress....
im workng the MS side, at eighforums.
no attachents here.? ah here. (MS create , not HP)
now , wonder of wonders, what did it backup?? ill find that out and report... the old glide drive is 25x slower than the extreme... i must be patient.

ok my glide stick works.
end issue 1.
issue 2: (simular but running MS code)
the MS recover disk, fails, (says missing files) "type create in the run box ,see it?)
with the help of ms. eightforums.
win 8.1, (debugging)
we find that the OS folders are missing for the, WinRe.win file. (my wild guess is win 8.1 update ,error)
we install that , and bingo, the MS recover feature works.
Issue 2 , resolved.
I used 7zip v934 apha to extract this from the 8.1.ISO from MS.com
this allows you to do a real, 8.1 REcover make disk. (one file 200k added)
can show the 3 steps if anyone wants this.
The SSD up grade is , nothing less than fantastic... (done lots of desktops, my first lap top and last)

Has there been any solution for this? im sitting in front of a very expensive HP-Envy with a brand new 32gb Sandisk Cruzer that apparently I cannot use. This is incredibly shoddy.
Can someone at least confirm that if my pc goes pop the recovery PARTITION can be used?
This is the second big problem ive had wih this machine (the first being the BSOD on the graphics driver that you supply and i had to hack my way around that in a method im not happy with)

there are 2 memory sticks now. flash disc, and UEFI flash disk (vitural)
one works
other will never works. (unless HP releases software so that both work) DON'T HOLD YOU BREATH, and is a sad story all this PAIN.
i got it to work, after buying many sticks. finding just 1, to work.
the windows 8 , certified sticks, all failed.\
i used the most cheap USB flash stick , and it worked, perfect.
i did all this just for kicks.
just to see if it would function as advertised.
what i did later is to just buy my own W8.1 key and abandoned, the HP software in total.
i have a MS win 8.1 install usb stick now and a key. (the real DEAL)
zero pain, zero fooling around and zero , buying sticks from all over town.

The Sandisk products don't work. I just made a recovery drive with a PNY flashdrive without any issues. Apparently you have to use a drive that isn't windows 8/8.1 compatible. Gotta admit, still scratching my head on that foulup!
Would have been nice to know that the sandisk products use a different system BEFORE I bought it, and had to make this thread!

that is NOT true. sorry ! SAN DISK, (do the tests, and see, that for true, i have.)
only the super fast, windows 8 , SANDISK version fails,,
i have every verson they make, all the ones marked, EXTEREME 3.0 USB fail
and is the fastest to burn, Stick on earth, (try it, and see its a Great product and works on all computers sold
but DOES NOT work on HP, backup
first off , it's a stick larger that 16GB, and as we all know, there are no 17GB , but are a power of 2,
32GB is the smallest that work. so we are talking a small univers of sticks here, small oners are useless.
for fun and kicks , i went to ebay, and imported a bunch of dirt cheap 32gb sticks , the ones with the lowest price.
guess what every one works from 3 vendors. (later used them for live boot sticks, linux and windows PE)
they work b because none are windows 8.0 certified, they are not UEFI sticks at all.
what is wrong is HP , their software is NO GOOD. (recover backup app)
there is no technical reason for it to fail, it's pure arbitray bad software.
the OS sees the stick
the OS can read it and write it
but the backup APP is DOA.
how can this presist??? my guess? too lazy too fix it. or too busy making new product to fix a 1 year old LT.
my guess is its bad Rebecca.exe, or what ever the new name is,. THAT NAME (filename)

The old-enough-to-fart-dust sandisk products work, though good luck finding one big enough to do so, since 16gb isn't enough!....and apparently, some of the newest ones work too...but finding the differences between the ones that will work and the ones that won't isn't easy. It comes down to serial numbers and whether or not it's listed as windows 8 compatible.
Gods know why HP won't just fix the backup tool so it will recognize all of them, in this length of time, is beyond me!

there is more to this
read up on UEFI,
the new w8 standard, makes the OS file format SECURE. and GPT is part of that.
that means the stick must be UEFI file structured.
Intel started this back in 1995 and is now run by the ISO comittee , (world) (intel gets a royalty on each system.)
in a nut sell the unmodified, system.
will not boot a the memory stick or DVD (dvd is going byebye now, floppy long gone) (virus entry points all.
this prevents, virus infections at the USB port and DVD port.
what happend is the Rebecca.exe guys didnt get the wake up call, that they needed to support BOTH sticks.
in the full OS, to bypass this restriction you go to UEFI (old name BIOS) AND turn off Secure boot.
now you can boot say , ISO USB, flash with say LIVE LINUX, or like me, my win8.1 install USB stick.
that why it dont work. they failed to support it at all levels, even at the rebecca.exe level.
read up on secure boot works, and its all clear as mud..... Good luck and happy trails.
this post does not solve the problem but does show what is related and why.
It is not solved now.
IMO
solving problem by getting in your car and back to the store for yet one more huge USB stick is crazy.
it sure is not GREEN.
it reminds me of the old days, windows 3.1 , to backup, have ready 25 floppy's , same bull different day.
i wonder how many poor folks, are searching for 23gb sticks..... i hope none.
its 32GB min. for sure. no need to look below . ever.
this is because thy pop over the 16GB boundary. Keep in mind it can be more. do to other reasons.

PNY Turbo 3.0 worked for me:
