Had a hard drive failure, and had to replace with a new hard drive.  So loaded Windows 7 Ultimate (system came with Vista), and monitor speakers were initially working.  As windows ran Update, somewhere along the way the monitor speakers stopped working.  I did all the obvious things, checked the HDMI cable, updated the Realtek audio driver to current (Nov. 2013), updated the My HP Display (version 1.40) and video drivers, checked to make sure the HDMI devise was checked as the default playback, volume levels raised to 75, nothing is muted.  When I click test on the Realtek HDMI Audio Device in Sound, I can see the green bars move up and down, but there is no sound coming from the monitor speakers.  I ran the audio playback troubleshooter, and it says the peripheral does not appear to be plugged in.  It is plugged in, or I wouldn't have been able to hear sound after windows 7 was initially installed.  I checked the HDMI and other monitor cables anyway, and they are all plugged in.  I'm out of ideas, and really need help.

Hi Trialguy,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP w2408h 24 inch LCD Monitor and sound not working correctly. Here is a link to troubleshoot sound issues.

 Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hi.  Like I said in my original post, I have already been to that page, have already ran the troubleshooter, and have already tried the things listed on the page and other pages referenced on that page.  Nothing worked, which is why I posted here.  I need help resolving this.  Please!

Hi Trialguy,

When you follow the document it takes you to a page Resolving HDMI Sound Issues with a Desktop Computer. In this page you will notice screen shots of when you right click on the sound icon in the lower-right corner. What do those screens look like for you?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

After I click on playback devices and bring up the Sound window, I can see the monitor icon with the label Realtek HDMI Output, as well as icons for Realtek Digital Output, Speakers, and Headphones.  Speakers and Headphones are greyed out since they are not plugged in.  Realtek Digital Output is not greyed out and says Ready.  The monitor icon is also not greyed out, has the check mark on a green circle background, and is marked as the Default Device.  Since it is already set as the default device, the Set Default button is greyed out.  When I double click Realtek HDMI Output and open the Realtek HDMI Output Properties window (Item 6 on the checklist) and click the Supported Formats tab (Item 7), there are no check boxes next to the choices under sample rates, but the various rates are there:  44.1 kHz, 48.0 kHz, 96.0kHz, and 192.0 kHz.  The box for Encoded Formats just says:  No compressed formats found.  There doesn't appear to be a way to select a particular sample rate among the four that are listed.  I've tried clicking and right clicking on 48.0 kHz with no effect, and the apply button remains greyed out regardless.  Clicking on ok or cancel also makes no difference.

Really frustrating  .....

No, but which one?  Besides the power cord, there is the HDMI cable and a USB cable.  If the HDMI video is working, how could it be the HDMI cable?  Not sure what the USB cable is for ....  Either way, I'd have to go out and buy another cable somewhere, but would need to know which one to get in order to try .....

HeyTrialguy,

Try Hdmi cable to hdmi is what you need to know all the cables are the same.

Please let me know.
