I am trying to install a nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti grafics card on my Compaq-Presario Desktop.
Model SR5115NL product number GN729AA-ABH running Windows Vista 32.

The message I get from the device manager is:
"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)."

It may have something to do with the Intel(R) 945G/GZ/GC/P/PL PCI Express Root port - 2771 which also has a problem
"Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device.
To use this device, contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)"

I have downloaded the latest drivers from NVIDIA and even install them manually.
Next I have visited the HP site and used the update tool to update drivers and BIOS, but so far getting nowhere.

What to do?

Success at last.

Using a program from PNY to check the Graphics card, it was concluded that the hardware was OK.

So it was most probably the Device Manager and/or the Operating System, who were unable to detect the graphics card properly and to read its hardware ids.

After the re-installation of Windows Vista and selecting the PCI-e display adapter in the Bios setup, everything went smoothly.
The card was recognized, the driver was installed and everything is working as it should.

Hi,

Did you make any other hardware modifications to your PC?

No nothing has been changed.

This is the first add on.

HI,

The 300 watt power supply in your PC is insufficient for the NVIDIA GTX 550 TI.

Please review the specifications for your PC.

OK Dave

I will have a look at that.

Thank you so far.

Hi,

The Geforce GTX 550 Ti needs 116 Watt.

So when I buy a 450, say 500 Watt powersupply, will it work then or will the bios still be an issue?

Hi,

A quality 400 watt PSU with 24 amps on the +12 volt bus is sufficient for this EVGA 550 TI video card.

Don't get caught up with just a card wattage number but instead stay with the card manufacturer's recommendation for the PSU size.

Why do you think that the "bios still be an issue"? The latest bios is posted here.

Hi Big_Dave,

Again, thanx for your quick response.

The reason I asked about the BIOS being an issue, is that the nvidia grafics card sits on the PCI-e bus and the Intel(R) 945G/GZ/GC/P/PL PCI Express Root port - 2771 is asking for a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35).

To me it looks like it may be connected.

I already have the latest BIOS version installed, using your HP update tool, but the error on the Root port remained.

Regards,

Peter

Hi,

You are getting multiple error codes from what you have posted. Why do you expect the hardware to get identified correctly and operate correctly if the power is insufficient?

Get the right size PSU for the NVIDIA 550 TI or get a card that has specifications for a 300 watt PSU.

For your information.

I have installed a bigger power supply.

The PSU even had a special connector for the PCI-E grafics card.

When I powered up the error on the root port was gone.

Then I installed the grafics card and the errors came back again, so back to scare one.

I discovered that the ID of the NVIDIA card is ven_1022&dev_7455. So the vendor is AMD and not NVIDIA

The equivelant of Nvidia would have been ven_10DE&dev_1244.

So I have AMD asked to have a look .

Keep you informed.
