As I mentioned above, I'm running a gtx 970 and it does work perfectly...but I have to put up with a 60+ second boot delay and several beeps. Makes me feel uneasy, but if I get another year out of this rig that should be fine I guess. I run my pc 24 hrs so don't do many reboots anyway.
But still... can we get some official help from HP here? Even just knowing the situation (new cards not supported?) would be nice to have confirmed.

You can wait for the response. But, I have been here long enough to see the same old responses from HP. Contact HP, HP says no bios update or check manually for latest, contact GPU vendor to see if their bios are legacy/UEFI friendly. Its a OEM machine and only expect to work with what it is shipped with. Got that response myself plenty of times. Is the power supply big enough? Did you disable secure boot if supported by the particular HP machine. Like I said. Expect canned responses. HP employees are on here.
They mainly help with customer service issues. When it comes to real issues like these. Deers looking into headlights. They might mention they will pass it onto the right people. But, it is never followed up on or addressed.

Hello, @nitrox , @Theropod-X, and @FattysGoneWild,
As I understand it all three of you are experiencing an issue when you are installing a upgraded graphics card on your computers. Now although what you believe is a BIOS issue is actually something quite simpiler. This is a hardware compatiblity issue that should not exist, but does and it is the same thing affecting all three of you even if you do have different symptoms.
Here is what I have gathered to help identify what is happening to each of you and why
nitrox
According to the HP Pavilion HPE h8-1040 Desktop PC Product Specifications page you have the Motherboard Specifications, IPISB-CH2 (Chicago) in your computer and it has the following expansion slots:
- One PCI Express x16
- Three PCI Express x1
- One PCI Express mini card x1
Your new graphics card is GeForce GTX 770 needing a PCIe 3.0 expansion slot and 600 watts of power.
Theropod-X
According to the HP Pavilion HPE h9-1150t Phoenix Product Specifications and Configurable Options page you have the Motherboard Specifications, IPIWB-PB (Pittsburgh) in your computer and it has the following expansion slots:
- Two PCI Express x16 (Gen 2.0)
- Two PCI Express x1 (Gen 2.0)
- One PCI Express Mini Card
Your new graphics card is GeForce GTX 970 needing a PCIe 3.0 expansion slot and 550 watts of power.
FattysGoneWild
According to the HP Pavilion HPE h9-1110t Phoenix Product Specifications and Configurable Options page you have the Motherboard Specifications, IPISB-CH2 (Chicago) in your computer the same one that is in nitrox's computer with the same expansion slots.
Your new graphics card is GeForce GTX 660 needing a PCIe 3.0 expansion slot and 450 watts of power.
Now according to an article by overclock.net titled The final answer to the controversial PCIe x16 version compatibility "Now we all know that PCI SIG is famous for designing the newer versions of PCI express slots which were backward and forward compatible with all the versions previously made. Until they introduced PCIe x16 v2.1, after which they chain of backward compatibility was reported broken. On various forums there were instances of people having trouble with their PCIe v2.1 graphic cards not running on PCIe v1.1 slots.".
Now how does this impact each of you? Well nitrox and FattysGoneWild you each have PCI-E 1.0 expansion slots which means the break in the downward compatibility of the PCIe cards that you have each purchased makes it unusable on your current motherboard. This is why you are getting a blank screen and I would suspect why your BIOS is inaccessible as it is unable to properly load the hardware component in the PCIe expansion slot. As for Theropod-X your PCIe expansion slot is PCIe 2.0 and this is why you have to wait a bit while the BIOS loads the graphic card at a lower generation than the card expects and then works as it should. Your motherboard is above the break in the PCIe downward compatibility break and thus works, just not as smoothly as it would if it were in a PCIe 3.0 expansion slot.
The article from overclock.net goes on to demonstrate how the author came to the conclusion and explains as best he can the technical explanation as to why the issue you are experiencing has arose.

Hello again @nitrox,
Unfortunately, I cannot make specific recommendation on a motherboard. I can though advise you to ensure that the motherboard you do purchase if you are going to use the same case is a uATZ factory form and if you want to use the graphics card that you purchased you should ensure that the motheboard has PCIe 3.0 expanstion slots. You will also be shopping for a new processor and most likely RAM as well. Shop around and you can find packages where a motherboard, processor and RAM are all included.
I hope this helps. Have a great day and again thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
