Re: Angelica compatible graphic cards

Hey so i know im late on this but only recently got a hp envy h8-1414 used (no money dont judge) and my girlfriend spoiled me with a zotac 750ti, (coming in tommorow) you all say it wont work with bios version 7, but checking my sys info i have bios version "AMI v8.06, 08/29/12" and im a little confused, ive built plenty of pc's before but the bios rarely affected the compatibility, if anything wouldnt the card be limited to the pci2.0 speeds instead of utilizing 3.0? thank you in advance.

750ti is the exception to the issue. 760 and up won't work with that board because they're designed to take advantage of UEFI.

AHHHHHHHHHH???

"The computer, HP h8-1150CTO is 2011 tech, and is WIN 7 technology, and alas is what is called a Legacy BIOS. It can not be upgraded to the newer UEFI BIOS (sept 2012) that is required by the newer GPU cards. That said, it's the problem. The only solution is a GPU released prior to Jul 2012 (to be safe). That fits the EVGA GTX 670 on the max end, but then I would recommend a Corsair CX600 PSU."

*So are you saying we could use other GPU's besides the HD 6670, that are at or below the GTX 670 (that were released prior to Jul 2012), IF we upgraded our PSU, or is it the HD 6670 or nothing?

Sorry, I'm getting even more confused, as I stated earlier my h8 1150z has a 460w already?

It's VERY hard when we're being limited to one choice that's pretty old technology now, there's not a lot out there & there are MANY styles of the HD 6670... :indifferent:

I would really like to know if it's that one card or NOTHING, I feel like I'm throwing money into the wind now... :Crying:

Let's un-confuse the graphic card issues.

Many on the AMD 6xxx graphics cards should work in your PC with the right size power supply.

Many of the NVIDIA 5xx and 6xx graphics cards should work in your PC with the right size power supply.

Some AMD 6850s will work with the 460 watt power supply in your PC. This card would be a decent choice.

The NVIDIA GTX 660 is an excellent choice when matched with the right size power supply. Some of the GTX 670s and up can be finicky depending on the BIOS in the PC hence the recommendation for the GTX 660.

Many of the legacy graphics cards are no longer sold by the manufacturers. You might find a few retailers that have left overs.  Your other choice is Ebay.

The upper end legacy graphics cards are power eaters. You might need to go upwards of a 600-650 watt power supply. If you want to stay with the existing power supply, then look for a graphics card that only requires one 6 pin auxiliary power connector.  In this case, the right models of the AMD 6850 or the NVIDIA GTX 660 would be my recommendation.  I would give the nod to the NVIDIA GTX 660.

, TYVVVM for replying, I'm very grateful for all the help I can get here...

*So are you saying the GTX-660 WILL work on my current system without having to replace the PSU, correct?

I would be thrilled to not have to have just one choice, the GTX at least seems a bit newer & easier found...

I look forward to your confirmation before I go forward ...

I TRULY appreciate ALL the feedback from you & everyone else in this thread, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I (as well as L3Nix) can get my hal up & running again ASAP & that this thread will help anyone else having this issue!

(*oh btw, I returned the RX 460 as well!)

A NVIDIA GTX 660 should work in your PC with the following caveats:

The GTX 660 has not been flashed for UEFI

The GTX 660 uses only one 6 pin PCI-e auxiliary power connector

The GTX 660 fits inside your PC

@ TYVM again but, lol...

So not to step on anyone's toes here, but I started a thread over in Tom's Hardware to see if I could get some more opinions on this issue & I'm getting some different answers then I got here & I'm wondering if you guys over here agree or disagree with these differing opinions... ??? :indifferent:

They feel I could probaly use the 660 suggested here, or I could use the GTX 750TI, your thoughts please?

*Most likely the BIOS (even with the update) just can't support such a modern graphics card. You'd be better off with an older card like the GTX 750Ti.

*So the GTX 750 is older than the GTX 660 then? I'm sorry guys I know Nothing about this stuff, this really has been a total nightmare for me... :'(

*No, the 600 series came out before the 700, then 900 and now 1000 series. However the 750Ti is almost the standard goto card for HP computers around the age of yours. If you can get a 660, then it should be fine too.

@LizzieBorden,
The 750Ti card is 2014.  Most are UEFI, but some 750Ti's that are hybrid cards.

@Big_Dave, is the most knowledgeable hardware GURU that I personally know.  His viewpoint on getting a GTX660 is correct.  The comparison of the GTX 660 and GTX 750Ti look are the full page (bottom).  If I was looking for a 660 card, I would always chose an EVGA GTX 660. Although the 460W PSU should work (431W sustainable), I just always suggest a Corsair CX600.  Simple combination of PSU and GPU, easy choice, and it works.

Your not wrong to cast your bait into another arena. Just use more caution

 What if you had bought a non-hybrid 750Ti ???

Wishing you the best in 2017.

Dean, TYVM...

So okay one last inquiry (I promise, I'm trying not to bug you) so in other words I'd be better off sticking with the EVGA GTX 660, then & staying away from the 750TI... or are you saying I can use the 750TI if it's a hybrid - 'but some 750Ti's that are hybrid cards.'

& if you are saying I could use a 'hybrid' 750TI, how do you know if it is or isn't a 'hybrid'?

Or should I just say forget it & try & find the EVGA GTX 660...

I'm trusting your knowledge in this please... :Crying:

& THANK YOU guys SO much again for helping me , I know I've said several times, but I'm saying it AGAIN... THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH for helping me, & being so patient with all my questions, I hate being so illiterate in this stuff, if we were talking software I wouldn't be so in the dark, I'm very sorry about that!!! :Crying:

Tom's Hardware has no influence on what we suggest on this HP Forum.

You have been given the correct information on this forum so now it's time to "cut bait or fish".
