This is really encouraging, Maestrod. I hope there'll be a remedy for my HP 630 error code too. It does give an error code when power-on-password is entered three times. I'm not with the laptop now but will bring out the code asap.

Thanks for your help.

REO,

You are the BOMB! I'm so grateful. The password cleared without issues. Thank you for your services. Now let's get to the main problem that led to my password being lost.

I installed Backtrack 5R3 on my laptop as a dual-boot with windows 7. Few weeks ago, I decided to remove the Backtrack install so I just formatted the drive on which it resides from windows 7.

Now when I start-up, it gives me this message:

          error: no such partition

           grub rescue>

Grub rescue above, is a command prompt for grub but I don't know how to interact with grub.

Actually I intend to just boot from a Windows 7 repair disc and hope that would fix this problem. I want you to know what the whole situation is.

REO, you just made my day. I have several forums meeting people that claim to even work for HP saying it's impossible to remove the Power-on-password once forgotten or lost but I chose to not give up and God has helped me by meeting you here.

God bless you.

Expecting your response to this one. sadorect@gmail.com

Sador.

You need to run Bootsect.exe.

Try this.

Instructions

  • 1

Insert the Windows 7 installation DVD and boot from your DVD drive .

You may have to change the boot order through system BIOS to boot from your DVD.

  • 2

Choose your default "Language," "Time" and "Keyboard Input" on the first window and click "Next."

  • 3

Click on the "Repair Your Computer " option to gain access to the System Recovery window.

Now choose "Command Prompt" to run the Bootsect.exe utility.

Bootsect is located inside the boot folder so change your directory to boot.

Now run "bootsect /nt60 C:\" (without quotes).

If you had Windows 7 initially installed in the C partition.

Alternatively, you can run "bootsect /nt60 SYS" or "bootsect /nt60 ALL" (without quotes) to repair the system partition or all partitions.

Eject the DVD and restart your computer. Your computer should now boot Windows 7 again.

Helo REO,

How was your weekend?

I'm back again having executed the steps you outlined. However, I still got the same prompt:

grup rescue>

after running bootsect repair on all drives.

What else can I do now?

My System partition is C: while windows is installed on F: but I have run bootsect on ALL to try fix it on all of them.

I enable system restore before the incident happened but when I selected System Restore as the option in the repair/startup/restore screen, it couldn't find a restore image yet, the default HP Restore Partition is still intact.

I booted a linux USB and tried to run grub restore according to a manual I got but the error from that was that the disk space was too small for the install.

I guess the boot space where grub normally squeeze itself has been shrunk. I don't know how to get past that under linux.

This is what I have done so far.

Thanks in anticipation of another solution from you.
