Updating windows vista after system recomvery

Since microsft doesn't support vista, if I do a system recovery, will I be able to download the old updates and get it updated to when microsoft quit supporting?

The answer I gave is exactly what may happen after you recover- and some links to updates to install that will prevent/help the hang. Read the article- it is referring to updates after a new install which is what a Recovery is.

Mostly "yes".

A few updates have officially been "retired", e.g., "Windows Live Essentials" may be offered as an update, but Windows Update will "hang" when it tries to download that update.

Similarly, the "Windows Security Essentials" anti-virus product is no longer available for download.

Existing installations of it have been "time-bombed" -- it stopped anti-virus scanning after April 11, 2017.

Some alternate free anti-virus software, e.g., AVIRA, have components that refuse to install onto Vista.

How old is your disk-drive?  Windows Vista was released in April 2007, and Windows 7 was released in 2010.

Thus, your disk-drive probably was manufactured between those two dates.

So, it's time to either pay $100 for a brand-new disk-drive, or to invest that $100 into a new computer.
