Should - yes. But sometimes you can get into strange timing compatibility issues. the best way to avoid is to buy the exact same type of RAM that is already in there - same brand - manufacturer. If you are buying online and the Web site has your model number of PC and they say it is compatible, then the site will usually take it in return if it is not compatible. Make sure that you can return the RAM if it is not compatible.

If you plan on keeping the Samsung DIMMs, I would try to find Samsung DIMMs of the same speed.
If you don't plan on keeping the 2 x 256 DIMMs (if you were upgrading to 4 x 1GB), then it is less important.

Hi RasterBlaster,
A late thank you for your answer. Just for fun, I found another document from HP where they state a max of 2 GB. Haha, are they're trying to make us mad?? Won't work in my case!! Anyway I'll try 2GB.

I am upgrading my PC. I just ordered 4 modules sticks of 2GB each PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 240 pin. Upgrading from 3GB to 8GB and upgrading from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I ran the system check and Windows Advisor and my pc is compatible with the Windows 7 64 bit. Have been watching videos and reading up on how to switch out the module sticks and intsalling the program. Which this site originally directed me to and thank you by the way, VERY helpful.
I just need to know when the modules and software arrive, what do I install first. The Winows7 64 bit or the 4 sticks of 2GB PC2-5300?? I hope I have all I need to upgrade my PC when my order arrives.
Thank you all in advance.

Hello,
Thanks for this tread. It starts to be a bit long to read all so I hope this question was not already there.
I have an old HP7870FR I use for surfing on internet but it starts to be a bit slow now. I have taken a look all over the place to try to get the right answer but no luck.
HP specs says maximum RAM is 512Mb but this system is installed with chip set VIA model KT133A. When you go to VIA web site they said it can support 1.5Gb RAM (http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/legacy/kt133a/)
So I would like to know If I can install 2x512Mb or if the limitation is really 512 and why?
Also does an upgrade of the bios is necessary?
Thanks for any answer you can provide.
Norbert
