Thanks, Big_Dave, I'll see if I can find out how to use the header.  Might just be the solution!!!

Looks good, I'll look around and see what I can find.

OK... so here is what I know about the "ROM Recovery Header". I have/had a p6130y that got bricked from a bad automatic HP BIOS update. HP is of no help regarding the header and HP customer support / case mangers won't touch this. They claim they don't have access to the technical documents and information pertaining to its use, nor will they refer it to a HP technician. This is the sole reason I am on these forums. I came here to fish for information and got nowhere.

While mentioned on many HP / Pegatron motherboards, very few specs have even minimum details about it's function. I have tried using a Blackcat JTAG/SPI programmer, but it never finds the SPI ROM or I get random data. The information listed below is from the Violet6 motherboard used in my HP p6320y.

ROM Recovery header

This connector allows qualified technicians to reload firmware into the SPI boot flash in case there
is a problem with the data.

This jumper should not be changed.

The ROM Recovery Header on the motherboard (Violet6).

ROM Recovery Header pin-out chart.

Pin-out functions (from my research):

GND = Ground

3VSB = 3 volts DC source

SPI CLK = Clock signal

SPI MISO = Master in / Slave out

SPI MOSI = Master out / Slave in

SPI CS# = Chip Select

I have checked all header pin-outs to the SPI ROM device and they appear to be correct. I think there are two CS# pins on the header (with a jumper) to bridge from the chipset to the SPI ROM in normal use. I think removing the jumper and connecting the programmer's CS# to the CS# pin that goes to the SPI ROM should allow programming of the SPI ROM. Sorry, I can't remember which of the two CS# pins goes to the SPI ROM at the moment. I need to look at my detailed notes for that.

Now, you all know as much about this as I do. Good luck!!!

Frank

Now I don't feel so stupid because of the little I could discover about the rom_recovery header.  I guess my next option is a refurbished board out of China.  Or I could just scrap the machine.  Never did like it anyway., could never understand the once a second disc activity LED with W7.

I got same situation, my hp8-1010 dead, I knew some risk in BIOS update, I test some bios update for few software, and I run sp56122.exe, this is the most new bios, just click ok and compare with the previous bios information like following

from 7.08 to 7.16

bios-2016-12.png

The second day, I turn on the computer, every led light like it was, but the screen is black and it dead.

from this post I think the first floor can't do anymore with HP technician, it's really don't worth to buy another motherboard, it's expensive than a same mode used PC, I can't find how to recovery roms information, this is the only one I can find from Google, the post's images in second page lost. I check the bios, it like this text:

Winbond

25????SIG

????09

If I can't recovery it, is it possible I use a simple tools like this:

USB Programmer CH341A in ebay

Hope techinitian here can give kindly information, thank and Merry Christmas 🙂
