TechShui,  That PSU I used to swap was a new 24 pin 480 watt Logisys unit.   I got a little excited with the link you suggested but calmed down after seeing the dual-cores were unavailable.   The same with NewEgg.   Must be popular CPU's.   I've bookmarked Fry's for future use.  Thanks for the link.    I've been using NewEgg and Geeks for parts ordering.    This HP site states that quad-cores are also useable with the motherboard....http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01357135 Then I've looked at other sites for the computer in question and it doesn't list quad-cores.    Hmmmm.    I'm going to take the computer to class tomorrow night and ask the instructor if he has a CPU that I can try there.   Could be a topic for the class.

Hey collieman5!

Did you find the culprit?

I was reading over your post & maybe your bio's chip is fried.

You say you can't even get into the bios post.

The clogged up unit has already fried something.

Motherboard componants stressed to the limit.

You could have taken out the hdd & installed it on a external file transfer cable (with a power supply) & see if the hdd was ok.

Get back with us on your findings.

I'm curious.

David

GOT IT!!    It was the CPU.   I could not find a dual core (Athlon 64 x2, as they are now obsolete) to replace the one in this computer that met the specs called for so I opted for a 2.7 Sempron.   Booted the first time.  Took about 10 minues to do so.   But after seeing the condition of the operating system and all the "junk" on it, it was clear as what had to be done.    Had to do a recovery (Vista) as hardly anything worked.   After the recovery I uninstalled all the unnecessary programs the owner won't use.  I asked him first.    He only surfs and emails so the Sempron should do him well.  This computer is working like greased lightning now.    Thank you all for your help and suggestions.   Collieman

That's great collieman5!

Wished mine could have been that cheap to repair.

I'm having to replace the motherboard on mine.

You must repair computers from what I see from your post.

I'm in the same field myself & really enjoy it.

Keep on fixin!

compuner60,  I've been messing with computer for a while now.   I used to repair TV's and radios but my parts houses around here all closed up making it hard to get parts so I go into computers.  I taught myself but thought that a course in repair might help.    Guys, I can fix computers but I can't find in "options" in first post to mark this one as "solved".    I'll look again.
