Same machine and board.  Intermittent operation about 9-10 mos ago but I traced it to Power Supply which I replaced with a Crucial 450 and all worked well.  I replaced the 5gig of memory with 8gig.  I have not had (knock on wood) any additional probs with computer.  As an aside the new power supply exhausts into the machine, directed toward the MoBo, which is opposite of the OEM rear discharge.  I do not have any additional drives installed in the machine either through the media drive or physical install.  The machine runs 24/7 without a hiccup.  I wonder if the new power supply air flow direction is helping.  At first I thought it would conflict with other fans and negate airflow.  I am in NE Ohio and the floor I am on does not have A/C.  maybe I am just lucky for now.  Chuck C.

Checked out all the ram and tested on another machine, all passed with flying colours. Defiantly the motherboard gone US.

Thanks for the tip though.

WELL HP only offering 25% off of the MB repair which is still 200+ dollars..when I can get a new more reliable board for under 100..just need to find a way to get the original harddrive to recognize the new board and components....Thanks everyone for their input. I did try the RAM test, but all RAM tested out fine in automated diagnostics as well as my own manual diagnositics..  Looks like HP will NEVER own up to this being an issue..*shrug*

WOW~finally found this thread. Mine is m9600t. The first problem was the blue screen problem, which happened a few months after I bought the computer. Since it was still within warranty, I got the mobo replaced for free. Now 20 months later, the HDD couldn't be detected.

It's interesting that HP do not have a moderator monitoring all the input from users and can see from all the replies that they obviously have an issue to face up to. I would guess that anybody here who has had this issue would not be purchasing another HP machine.

Lost business to HP I think.

I for one can tell you that I will NOT be purchasing another HP computer.  I even made an off hand comment to my wife when we were contemplating buying a new one after mine took a crap after less than two years that maybe if we get one with an ATI chip instead of an NVIDIA chip...well she stopped me and said "are you kidding"?  "why would you even think about giving them our money again"? I said your right honey, I don't know what I was thinking.  NEVER AGAIN!  I have had two friends recently tell me they are getting a new computer soon.  Guess what advice I gave them?...

This is not rocket science here. All HP needs to do is:

1. Admit that their engineers miscalculated the amount of heat to dissipate.

2. Send registered owners a gift certificate for 50 bucks or so, tell them the problem, and have them take the 50 bucks and take the PC to a local computer service and have a fan installed on the heatsink.

3. Give them an option and send it back in to HP to have a fan installed.

Problem solved. Loyal owners stay loyal. They could emerge with some good PR.

Do you think that HP was the only PC manufacturer who used that NVIDIA chip in their design? I don't think so. Do yourself a favor. Google "nvidia chip overheat dell" and see what you get.

Then you will see the big picture.

If there was a moderator on this forum, they would have kicked me off long ago.

You are so right about the heatsink.  I had an "eMachines" that died of the same disease, and guess what?  Nvidia card.  Motherboard couldn't handle it.  The guy at the computer shop thought it was a defective MB, but it had actually just roasted in the heat.

I'm going to buy a Gateway computer equal to the RAM & Memory of my old HP, which has an Intel graphics card instead of NVIDIA.  Not making that mistake again.  And I won't be buying HP computers ever again.  I'm on a almost 10 yr old Gateway desktop now, which has lasted through total virus infestations AND a design flaw that causes the housing to become too hot.  But it has an Intel card, and it is still going strong.  I suggest nobody buy any computer with an NVIDIA chip in it -- that is, if you want your computer to last more than a year and a half or so.

My HP is dead too. Same problem as everyone else -  the BIOS no longer recognizes the hardrive or the DVD drive. The SATA controller is dead. I have a pavillion P6210y with a m2n78-la motherboard. Computer is a little more than a year old.

HP has a serious problem on their hands. They have two paths they can go down: HERO: admit to their mistake and make things right; or COWARD: stick their head in the sand {Content Removed: legal discussion}
