i am currently using a dc7800, its current setup is this:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
GPU: EVGA GeForce GT 620 1024MB
RAM: 4x 2gb dimm 240 pin 800 mhz (its all dual channel and ddr2)
Hard Drive: 2 TB
motherboard: Hewlet Packard model 0AA8h
Case: dc7800
Power supply output 240W max (its still the standard psu that was included)
NOTE: the information pertaining to the cpu, RAM, and motherboard were obtaind with a program called CPU-Z
Power supply part number is: 437352-001
its spare number is: 437798-001
Operating system is OEM version of Windows 7
im looking to upgrade both the PSU and the CPU (PSU upgrade is probably made mandatory by the vid card but im not sure)
if i found corecty the cpu socket is 775 LGA aka LGA775
what are the best CPU's and PSU's that i can put in this?
i am using it as a gaming computer
edit: was thinking of getting a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Processor for a cpu would that work?

Hi:
The power supplies in HP business desktops are proprietary which means you won't be able to upgrade it.
Below is the link to the dc7800 quickspecs. The supported processors are listed on page 9.
I would imagine you need to have the latest BIOS and microcode installed to ugrade to the Q9550.

yea i saw that was gonna edit my message and saw your reply. 1 more question as the current cp is the E6550, will i need a new cooling unit to go with the Q9550 chip? [from what i can seem to find the cooling unit adds a not insignificant amount to the overall price tag 😞 ]

I don't think there is a different heatsink from the parts list.
As you can see from the illustrated parts map below, there is only one heat sink/fan unit.
I have no idea if you can install an aftermarket heat sink in that model.
Normally you cannot unless you modify the case or something, and I would not even begin to know how to do that.

i wasnt referring to an aftermarket heat sink, usually when anybody in my family orders a cpu it tends to come with its own heat sink. i dont know if THAT would be referred to as after market.
Edit i also found This topic about PSU upgrade for the dc7800

seems to point that it can be upgraded

The heat sink that comes with the processor you buy will be much different than the one in your PC, and I doubt it will just hook right up in place of the existing one.
If you look at the pictures of the power supplies the other forum members posted, it is obvious to me that they look nothing like the one that is in your PC right now.
So yes, if you want to hack the xxxx out of your PC's case, you can upgrade just about anything, I would imagine.
The other thing is that the power connectors on a standard power supply that go to the mainboard are different than the ones on yours. So, if you know how to modify those to work, then again, you can upgrade just about anything.
BIOS v1.32 is the latest one.

final question(i hope). with the planned upgrade to the cpu the ram i have in there and especially taking into acount the video card (whose specs can be found here: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-620/specifications) do i actually need even worry about upgrading the PSU?
