I have a HP Pavilion a6720y Desktop PC
that came with Vista, but has windows 7 upgrade.
I came home from town to find that the power had gone out,and now the pc wont boot.
I have been getting this error "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media
in selected decvice, press any key" but nothing,it wont recognize a disc is even in . after playing with it all day,im now getting this message "error loading operating system" i had made some recovery discs when i got the pc and also have the windowns 7 disc, but it wont take either. trying to get to safe mode to check harware doesnt work either. Please any ideas?

Hi,
The new HDD should fit niceley on your machine. The existing HDD is:
- Size: 640 GB
- Interface: SATA
- Transfer rating: 3.0 Gb/sec
- Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
Regards.

Hi,
Probably your machine was ON during power outage and the HDD was working (such as downloading something). Power outage when a computer is running can cause un-predicatble damage(s). The HDD of your machine may be dead and also may be other components. Probably you can buy other component(s) but sometimes very costly to get your files/data back from a failed HDD.
My suggestion: pull the HDD out, using an external enclosure to check first.
Hope this helps.

altho i would love to not lose all my picture files off drive ,just getting pc running is the main thing. im kind of on my own figuring this out as hubby is pc challenged.
cna you explain this a little more "My suggestion: pull the HDD out, using an external enclosure to check first."
i also have a 2t external drive, any chance of booting from that somehow?

Hi,
My main point is to check the HDD and recover data/files first that why we need to pull the HDD out and put in an enclosure to check the HDD.
Regards.

Try clearing CMOS settings and restart to see if the hdd is recognized. If still no joy, try plugging the hdd into another SATA port. All of this can be seen on the motherboard specs page:

treid the other SATA port. took out battery to clear the cmos.
checked bios,it is now showing the drive. but it still wont boot to disc to install windows on new drive. am i right in thinking the bios should be set to boot to cd/dvd first. and the sata setting and not the ide? im really stumped and beginning to wonder if old drive wasnt bad after all.
is it possible that the discs wont work in this new hard drive? and would getting a full version windows 7 or 8 boot .
what i have is hp recovery discs of vista, then a upgrade 7.This is the first hp pc i have had and have had nothing but problems with it. my compaq lasted 13 yrs no problems.
