Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP OMEN Accelerator GA1-1010na PSU underrated for advertised NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ti

Advertised compatible with 1080 TI:

   See - supported graphics cards - http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/omenaccelerator/overview.html

Power requirement of 1080 Ti card (Recommended System Power 600 W)

See - full spec - Thermal Power Specs:  https://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/10series/geforce-gtx-1080-ti/#specs

Power provided by OMEN Accelerator GA1 PSU 500W total yet only 420W @ 12V used by 1080 TI

See  Review 'The shell is under powered for the latest graphics' https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/omen-by-hp-accelerator-shell-ga1-1000

I have already bought the Accelerator + Zotac NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080Ti 11GB 352BIT GDDR5X and the HP Spectre x360 13-ae003na Convertible Laptop  (latest x360 model)

All installed ok but system is reporting low power to graphics card as you would expect after reading the above.

“PLEASE power down and connect the PCIe power cable(s) for all graphics cards” This is done. 2 x 8 pin connectors on the 1080 Ti via adapter cables supplied with 1080 Ti to 2 x 6 pin PSU connectors on the Accelorator PSU. I have a two pin PSU connector spare by the way.

So what do I do now!?

@Grason

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

Thank you. Looking forward to your advice.

Some further information on the issue that may help:

I followed this HP setup procedure with success all apart from the issue we are discussing here in this forum thread:

Sourced Alternative PSU
I have sourced an alternative PSU for the GA1 - a very high quality, very small form factor, high wattage PSU that I would like to try in the GA1 to resolve this issue - as I need the system up and running.

The PSU operates without it's fan running - so totally silent when not in high demand (i beleive less than 50 degrees) . This will suit me too as I would like a near silent system.

The PSU will fit in the GA1 PSU space with some mods and poss air flow issues, but I propose leaving the GA1 supplied PSU in place (unpowered and unplugged) then have the SX800 PSU outside of the case feeding the DC supply cables in through the GA1 lid (left slightly open).
An earthing bond will be needed as the metal SX800 PSU will not be screwed into the metal chassis of the GA1.

I'm awaiting a PM from suppoert on this issue. But in the mean time ...

What would be interesting to know is how many GA1 Accelerator users are successfuly using  GTX1080 and GTX1080 Ti GPU cards in the GA1?

Anyone who is please let us know here in this thread - cheers

My Zotac Geforce GTX 1080 Ti mini GPU card has 2 x 8pin black PCIe PCB mount female connectors which require feeding with power.

From the GA1 PSU I have now combined the black 2 way connector with the 6 way PCIe power connector to form an 8 way and connected that directly to the GPU. Then used a Zotac supplied adaptor cable 6way to 8 way for the other GA1 PSU connector. Unfortunatly looking at it this Zotac supplied adapter forks the 8 way to 2 x 6 way.

Still getting the bios style error message - gpu not enough power.

I've ordered a PCIe power cable adapter: 6 way to 8 way to try that (one with links fitted at the 8way end)

"This PCI Express 6 pin to 8 pin power adapter cable lets you connect a standard 6-pin PCI Express power connection provided by the computer power supply to newer ATI and NVidia video cards that require an 8 pin power connection."

Then both GPU 8 way connectors will have full feed. I will report back on progress.

Solved

My GA1 PSU (within brandnew GA1 May 2018) has 1 x 6-pin+2-pin pcie  power connector and 1 x 6-pin pcie  power connector.

But new cards have 2 x 8-pin connectors so the GA1 PSU sould be supplied with an adapter along with instructions now that thay're delaring it as complatible with the latest high end video cards. As the problem has being around possibly since 2015 as it's mentioned here:

Toms hardware Sept 2015  'New Video Card has two 8 pin power slots, my power supply only has 6 pins'

that high end video cards have been appearing with 2 x 8-pin pcie connectors.

HP state that the GA1 is compatible with these high end cards yet since 2015 2 x 8-pins are required and unfortunatly they are two pins short on one of the PSU supply forks as it only has 6 pins.

So to overcome this you arn't told you have to find out with lots of stress that you need a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter connector.

I used the adapters that came with my video card but these are not the right ones. You need the one that has links in it to provide the video card with power to all of its 8 pins.

This one does the trick - £3.35 ebay 381175901514 [2 pack] 10cm PCI Express PCIe 6 Pin to 8 Pin Graphics Card Power Adapter Cable from kenable_ltd

See the diagram here for pcie power configs:

Just received my HP Accelerator and can confirm that my MSI GTX1080Ti Armor Edition does NOT work with the power supply provided (after converting the 6 to 8 pin it did start up once, but after that first time i only received Windows warning messages when plugging it in).

Using another power supply simply outside of the Accelerator box does the trick and it does now work. However this is not a solution i comfortable with, so i will be returning the GA1 Accelerator.

Update: I thought i'd give it one more try before sending it back. For some reason the accelerator is now working fine. Although it seems to stutter more than using the "external" PSU.
