HP 400 Backlit wired keyboard
Microsoft Windows 11

Re HP400 Backlit Wired keyboard. I'm trying to program a Function Key  F10 to take a screen shot

(Windows+Prt SC). I program it via HP accessory Centre using  Keystroke record. It records the actions as

"L-WIN+KPASTERISK' but doesn't work when I press the F10 key. Any ideas please?

Hi @SeeJay56 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re trying to program the F10 key on your HP 400 Backlit Wired Keyboard to take a screenshot using HP Accessory Centre, but the recorded keystroke isn’t working. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Verify the Correct Shortcut

The standard Windows screenshot shortcut is Windows + PrtScn (Print Screen), not “Windows + *”.

Make sure the keystroke recorder is capturing PrtScn correctly.

Use the Dedicated Print Screen Key

On most HP keyboards, the Print Screen key is labeled PrtSc or PrtScr.

Try recording Windows + PrtSc directly instead of using the numeric keypad.

Check Keystroke Recording Accuracy

If HP Accessory Centre shows “L-WIN+KPASTERISK,” it may be misinterpreting the key press.

Record again by pressing Windows + PrtSc slowly and clearly.

Test with Another Shortcut

Assign F10 to a simpler shortcut (like Ctrl + C) to confirm the programming works.

If that works, the issue is with how the app interprets Print Screen.

Try Alternative Screenshot Shortcuts

Windows also supports Windows + Shift + S (Snip & Sketch).

Record this combination instead—it often works better with programmable keys.

Update HP Accessory Centre

Ensure you’re running the latest version of HP Accessory Centre.

Updates may fix keystroke recognition issues.

Confirm Keyboard Driver Updates

In Device Manager, update the keyboard driver.

Restart and test again after updating.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,

I've done some more testing.

PRT SC records as 'KPASTERISK' and also "*" records as 'KPASTERISK'.

I can successfully program F10 to do "CTRL+C" so the programming works.

It is just the interpretation of PRT SC.

Any more ideas please?

Hi @SeeJay56,

Thank you for the response.

I understand you’re trying to program F10 for screenshots on your HP 400 Backlit Wired Keyboard, and the Print Screen key is being detected incorrectly. Let’s go through a few steps to check what can be done.

Record the Windows + Shift + S shortcut instead
This opens the Snipping Tool for quick screenshots.
Record it slowly: press Windows → Shift → S.

Assign F10 to launch the Snipping Tool directly
In HP Accessory Centre, choose “Launch a Program.”
Browse to: C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe.

Check if Fn Lock is affecting Print Screen
Press Fn + Esc to toggle Function Lock.
Then try recording Windows + PrtSc again.

Re-record Print Screen manually after toggling Fn
Hold the Windows key first, then press PrtSc clearly once.
Avoid pressing PrtSc from the numeric keypad.

Test programming using a simple shortcut to confirm the software is working
Assign F10 to Ctrl + C or Ctrl + V.
If that works, the issue is only with how the app reads Print Screen.

Update HP Accessory Centre to the latest version
A newer version may correct keystroke detection for PrtSc.
Restart the PC after updating and test again.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I don't want to go down the Snip & Sketch route. Can't you get access to the same keyboard and come up with a working solution please?

I've messaged you in Private Chat. It now says "You do not have sufficient privileges for this resource or its parent to perform this action" when I try and access the Private Messages section?
