We're trying to add an external harddisk to my PC through the front access doors however when we add it, the PC doesn't seem to notice and somehow doesn't see the harddisk in there. We followed all the steps on how to do it properly and we still can't see it. What are we doing wrong? The harddisk is 100% OK.

I understand that the external hard drive is not working.


Have you tried with a different USB port?


Please let me know hard drive is working on a different computer.


Please try a few steps recommended below.
1. Open Device Manager.
2. Expand the category “Universal Serial Bus controllers”.
3. Double-click the “USB Root Hub” device, and click the Power Management tab. (if there’s more than one USB Root Hub device, repeat these steps for each one.)
4. Turn off the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option, and click  OK button.


Disconnect all USB devices connected to the computer except a USB mouse and keyboard (if in use). This includes hubs, thumb drives, printers, and cameras.
In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
The Device Manager window opens.
Double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list.
Right-click the first USB Root Hub in the list, then select Uninstall.
Click OK to confirm.
Continue uninstalling all USB Root Hubs listed.
Close Device Manager and restart the computer.
If the USB device that is having problems came with software and it was not previously installed, install the software now, following the manufacturer instructions.
Reconnect the USB device that was having problems and test it to see if it works.

Open Device Manager (Right Click on Windows Logo and Click Device Manager).
Now find and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Now right-click on USB drivers and click Uninstall. Do for all USB drivers one by one.
Now Restart your PC. The USB drivers are automatically re-install and solve the corrupted USB devices.
Right-click on the battery icon and click Power Options.
Click Change plan settings.
Now click Change advanced power settings.
Find and expand USB settings.
Expand USB selective suspend settings and Disable both On battery and Plugged in settings.


Also, try the steps recommended below.


On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. 

Click the down arrow to expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click USB Root Hub option and click Properties.

Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK.

If you have more USB Root Hubs, you need to repeat this operation a couple of times. Please remember to click OK after each performance.

If your USB device is still not working after this, please check the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power back on. 

Follow the path: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

Click Choose what the power button does.

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable. 

Uncheck Turn on fast startup and press Save changes.

Restart your computer and plug in the USB device to see if it works.

Also, try updating the BIOS and chipset drivers on your PC using the HP support assistant and check if it helps.

Hey Praveen, we managed to fix it the same day i posted this, sadly i couldnt find a delete or closed button so i had to leave it here. We managed to fix it by connecting the disks in disk manager. Thank you for your answer though, we really appreciate it. Good night.
