Microsoft Windows 11

On my omen 30L I had updated windows to 11 from 10 and ugraded the graphics card form RTX 2060 to RTX 3090. I also updated the drivers. When I start gaming, the first game I start experiencing stuttering. After the first game, it fixes itself and its fine there after. Do I need to do anything to the Bios or update anything else because of the changes?

Hi @RalphML

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Based on your setup and the symptoms you're describing, initial stuttering in the first game after boot, which resolves afterward, especially after major hardware and OS upgrades. Here's a breakdown of what might be going on and what you can do:

Possible Causes

  1. Background Processes on First Boot:

    • Windows 11 may be running background tasks (like indexing, updates, or telemetry) right after startup, which can cause stuttering in the first game.
  2. Driver Initialization or Shader Compilation:

    • The first game might be triggering shader compilation or driver-level optimizations that get cached, making subsequent games smoother.
  3. BIOS Compatibility:

    • After upgrading to an RTX 3090, your BIOS might not be fully optimized for the new GPU. Some users have reported that updating the BIOS helped resolve similar stuttering issues .
  4. Thermal or Power Management Settings:

    • HP OMEN desktops sometimes have aggressive thermal or power-saving settings in the BIOS or OMEN Gaming Hub that can throttle performance until the system "warms up."
  5. XMP/Memory Settings:

    • If you haven’t enabled XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) in BIOS, your RAM might be running at lower speeds.

Recommended Steps

  1. Update BIOS:

    • Visit the HP OMEN 30L support page and check for the latest BIOS version for your specific model (GT13-xxxx).
    • Follow instructions carefully when updating BIOS.
  2. Enable XMP in BIOS:

    • Reboot into BIOS (usually by pressing ESC or F10 during startup).
    • Look for XMP or memory profile settings and enable the appropriate profile for your RAM.
  3. Clean Install NVIDIA Drivers:

    • Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove old drivers.
    • Reinstall the latest drivers from NVIDIA’s website.
  4. Check OMEN Gaming Hub:

    • Ensure performance mode is enabled.
    • Disable any unnecessary background services or lighting effects that might consume resources.
  5. Monitor Startup Tasks:

    • Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check for high CPU or disk usage right after boot.
