OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wf0000 (755G1AV)

Hello posting this because I cant find the first post I made!

Over 160 people have the same issue!

I have those specs (i7-13HX/16/512/4070)

HP has made a fatal design flaw in the omen 16 2023 they have put hall sensor that regulates the closing of the laptop lid TO CLOSE to the heatsink. Within short time of usage the laptops sensor gains a defect and it goes "crazy". The laptop thinks the lid is closed/sleeping/hibernate even if the lid is open...therefore the powerbutton is also inactive and whatever you press, you will get no response! So...you are not able to start the device because of the sensor!

I purchased the laptop from Elgiganten and encountered this design flaw as explained above. I contacted HP support in Sweden, and they were extremely unknowledgeable! As customers, we have no way to reach anyone with higher authority or file a complaint, and customer service has no idea what to do. They also refuse to provide any contact details for us to take this matter further.

I want HP to take action regarding this problem. We, as customers, placed a lot of trust in your product and chose to buy from HP! We expect you to recall the HP Omen 16 (2023) models affected by this design defect and either refund our money or offer us a different laptop model with the same specifications.

My laptop has already been sent for service twice at Elgiganten for the same issue. My time is being wasted on a laptop with a design defect that simply cannot be fixed. If necessary, I will escalate this matter to ARN (Allmänna Reklamationsnämnden, the National Board for Consumer Disputes in Sweden) and higher authorities.

I want to know how HP will act when they become aware that one of their well-known products has such a defect and they neither take action nor inform their customers about it. As a customer, I feel completely deceived!!!

Hi @3KH3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're thrilled to have you on board!

I completely understand how frustrating and exhausting this situation must be for you. You’ve put your trust in HP, and I can see why this issue has left you feeling deceived. I truly appreciate the time and effort you've already spent trying to get this resolved, and I want to do everything I can to help.

Before we take any further action, I’d like to try a few troubleshooting steps with you, as this might not be a design flaw but rather a settings-related issue. Windows actually allows you to control how your laptop behaves when the lid is closed.

To adjust these settings on Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Power & battery
  2. Click on Lid & power button controls
  3. Under Closing the lid will make my PC, adjust the settings for Plugged in and on battery to either do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut down based on your preference.

Let me know if this helps! Also, could you confirm which operating system you’re using? If it’s something other than Windows 11, I’ll provide steps specific to your OS.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

I already knew about these settings and tried changing them, but the system did not execute them properly. Even though I set it to "Do nothing" when closing the lid, the laptop still shuts off. This proves that the issue is not related to software settings but rather a hardware defect.

Thank you for your response, but this is not a settings issue—this is a hardware design flaw that affects many users.

The hall sensor is placed too close to the heatsink, and due to heat exposure, it malfunctions over time. This is why so many HP Omen 16 (2023) owners are experiencing the same issue. The laptop randomly thinks the lid is closed, and the power button becomes unresponsive, making the laptop unusable.

This has nothing to do with Windows settings. My laptop has already been sent for repair twice, and the issue keeps coming back because it’s a design problem.

I would like HP to acknowledge this issue and provide a real solution, such as a recall or replacement with a different model. Ignoring this will only result in more frustrated customers and potential consumer rights actions, including escalation to ARN (Allmänna Reklamationsnämnden, the National Board for Consumer Disputes in Sweden).

Please provide an official statement on what HP intends to do about this defect.

Every user of the 2023 Omen Laptop purchase between May and July needs to file a complaint with their State Attorney General. This is a known defect. HP only replaces the motherboard that has hall sensor containing same defect. It's placed too close to heat source and simply fails.

Some attorney needs to also take a close look at this for a class action lawsuit.

My issue appeared within the 14th month. Pulled the hall sensor connection (30 second fix) and issue hasn't reappeared. The hardest part was flipping up the black hinge... If want to call it hard.

Can't close lid and enter sleep mode but my laptop works flawlessly now.

Will never purchase another HP product again

@Deborshi28, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Hall-effect Sensor Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with the Hall-effect sensor in your OMEN 16 laptop. The Hall-effect sensor regulates whether the laptop is open or closed. Here are some recommended troubleshooting steps to address the issues you're having:

Quick Check

Visually Examine:

  • Look for any physical damage around the sensor area near the heatsink.
  • Examine the display for cracks, liquid crystal leaks, and dirty spots on the glass.

Reset and Update BIOS:

  • Update the BIOS and docking firmware.
  • Check for any available updates on the HP drivers website.

Update Operating System and Drivers:

  • Install the latest operating system updates and graphics/video drivers.

Windows Settings:

  • Configure Windows settings such as Power options, Screen brightness, Personalization, and Screen resolution.

External Display Test:

  • Test with a verified working external display.
  • Boot to Windows in safe mode if necessary.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to conduct video tests. To start this tool, press the F2 key during boot, select Component Tests, and then select Video. Test options include:
    • Video Memory Check: Tests video memory.
    • Palette Check: Tests the three video color components (red, green, blue).
    • Dead Pixel Check: Checks for dead pixels in eight different colors.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
