HP Pavillion Gaming 690-0073w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Device Manager lists current SSD as KBG30ZMV256G Toshiba also described as 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD in HP documentation. But, much of the HP documentation on this product seems to describe a generic Pavillion 690-XXXX, and is not particularly helpful. A web search of the above description shows products of differing connectors.  So I would like product recommendations that have been verified to work with my specific model number.  Alternatively, I would be happy to just add an additional SSD drive but this model doesn't seem to offer that option. Or, does it?

Hi:

According to the Crucial memory report for your PC, you can install either type 'gumstick' M.2 SSD drive.

You have to scroll down the whole long page to see both types.

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-690-0073w

You should stick with the NVMe drive because they provide much better read/write speeds than the SATA drives do.

This is the 1 TB M.2 NVMe drive offered by Crucial for your PC.  It is listed next to the last item on the bottom of the page.

I recommend either a clean install of W10 using the media creation tool to create a bootable USB installation flash drive, or you can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable recovery drive that will install W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility.

@QJaxon,

As you realized,  you need a PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.

Crucial has a 1TB     NewEgg sells it also, plus Samsung.

You will also need an external PCIe NVMe to USB to make the clone, then swap the SSD's.

The Crucial product recommended shows that it has different connectors that what is installed in my computer.  I pulled the installed SSD and it looks like this.  I am still in the woods.KBG30ZMV256G.jpg

i learned that all M.2 NVMe drives are not created equal - there are apparently at least 3 different connectors (Keys).  It seems the HP970-0073w came with a drive that is of an earlier generation (and cheaper, now?) Kiitos Paljon, Paul.
