It looks like HP has been rolling out firmware updates, including version 15.21.0.0, through Windows Update. Is this a legitimate update and what was updated?

Greetings @riverosa

Welcome to the HP Forum.

The HP firmware update offered by Windows update would be legit.

It would be tough to ID what's being updated if Windows Update does not provide a description.

My guess is: this update may be a BIOS update if it is labeled as a firmware update.

You might want to delay doing this update, or avoid this update, if it is optional. I have seen quite a few folks in this Forum have problems after doing HP firmware (BIOS) updates offered by Windows Update.

You can stop HP firmware updates offered by Windows as follows:

Enter Advanced System Settings in Search.

Select the appropriate search result.

Select the Hardware tab within the System Properties dialog box.

Select Device Installation Settings. Select No. Save changes. Select Apply then OK.

Check and use your PC's HP driver download site for driver and firmware updates.

Thank you. I was concerned if it was legit.

Greetings @riverosa

My pleasure.

It's legit but there is a chance a Windows Update BIOS update could corrupt your PC's BIOS.

Proceed with caution.

Regards
