I was looking to buy a new ssd as a lot has developed in the speed and price since i bought my pc and was completely assured on an nvme but when i opened up my pc to check if there was the correct pcie slot, i was faced with a dated motherboard that had one pcie x16 and one pcie x1. now im wondering if i am able to remove the motherboard and that its not soldered down and if so what motherboards are compatible

@James171 , welcome to the forum.
You can replace the motherboard. However, HP has their motherboards made to their specifications. Therefore, they do not always have the same connectors as a retail board. The problems that I have seen are connectors for the front components, power button, etc.
I suggest that you consider upgrading your SSD to a Samsung 860 EVO. I am using a Samsung M.2, 970 Pro, in my custom build. I have used a Samsung 840 EVO as my boot drive in another computer. I believe that it is very difficult to tell the difference in boot times and app opening times. There are many situations that determine these times.
