I recently got a new 1 tb ssd that I want to swap for my current 500 gb ssd but my pc only has one slot and I have no hdd or external hdd. How should I do it?

Hi:

 

If you are referring to cloning a NVMe SSD, and your PC does not have two NVMe SSD slots, you can purchase a USB3/USB-C NVMe adapter to install the new SSD in so you can clone it.

 

Something like this...

Is it necessary to clone the ssd?

That's up to you. 

 

I never do.

 

I prefer to clean install Windows on the new drive and reinstall my programs and files. 

 

It only takes me about an hour or so to reinstall everything the way I want it.

What would I risk losing and can you recommend a guide for that process?

I recommend that you use the HP Cloud Recovery tool to install Windows
