Hi:

If you are referring to cloning a NVMe SSD, and your PC does not have two NVMe SSD slots, you can purchase a USB3/USB-C NVMe adapter to install the new SSD in so you can clone it.

Something like this...

Amazon.com: ORICO M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD Case Support...

Is it necessary to clone the ssd?

That's up to you.

I never do.

I prefer to clean install Windows on the new drive and reinstall my programs and files.

It only takes me about an hour or so to reinstall everything the way I want it.

What would I risk losing and can you recommend a guide for that process?

I recommend that you use the HP Cloud Recovery tool to install Windows

Here's an info link for how to use the utility.
