@Jotah89, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

From what I can see, you have an HP prebuilt gaming desktop (possibly something like the HP Pavilion Gaming or Omen series), and you've already upgraded a number of components like the PSU, GPU, SSD, and plan to upgrade the RAM.Your current CPU is an Intel Core i7-8700K, and you're wondering whether your motherboard can support an i9, or if upgrading to an i7-9700 is a better choice.

First, Let’s Identify Your Motherboard

Based on the image, the motherboard appears to be an OEM HP motherboard with a red-and-black color scheme, commonly seen in HP desktops like the HP 8309 or 8437 series, using Intel 300-series chipsets (likely Z370 or B360).

🔎 Compatibility Breakdown:

Your Current CPU:

  • i7-8700K: 6 cores / 12 threads, base 3.7 GHz, turbo 4.7 GHz
  • Supported on LGA 1151 socket (300-series chipset)

🔁 i7-9700:

  • i7-9700 (non-K): 8 cores / 8 threads, no hyperthreading, higher single-core performance.
  • Still LGA 1151, compatible with Z370/Z390 motherboards after a BIOS update.
  • Not a huge upgrade over the 8700K unless you're moving to multi-core focused workloads.

i9 Compatibility:

  • i9-9900 / i9-9900K are also LGA 1151 (300 series) chips.
  • If your motherboard is Z370 or Z390, it can support i9-9900K (8 cores / 16 threads) with a BIOS update.

🔧 What You Should Check

  1. Find the exact HP motherboard model:
    • Use msinfo32 or CPU-Z to check the baseboard model.
    • If it’s something like “HP 8437” or "8433" with Z370, then you're likely safe to upgrade to i9-9900 or 9900K.
  2. BIOS version:
    • You'll need the latest BIOS from HP to support 9th-gen CPUs.

Recommendation

  • If your motherboard supports it, the i9-9900K is the best CPU you can get for that platform.
  • 🔁 The i7-9700 is not a major jump from i7-8700K — you’ll actually lose hyperthreading.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • Be aware that HP OEM motherboards often lock BIOS updates or have limited overclocking features even with K-series CPUs.

RAM Compatibility

  • 64 GB DDR4 3200 UDIMM Crucial Pro should work if your motherboard supports XMP and 64 GB max capacity.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
