OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-115se
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I have an Omen 870-115se with stock hardware. When I check compatibility for Windows 11, I am told this PC is not eligible because the CPU is not supported. Is there anything that I can do to upgrade this PC’s hardware in order to upgrade it to Windows 11?

@Dustin22,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Your OMEN By HP Desktop PC - 870-115se (V9B15AA), as per: OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-115se Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support, is fitted with the Thimphu (Pegatron) motherboard (SSID: 2B4B), which has the Intel Z170 chipset.  The specs mentions that your OMEN can handle processors up to a TDP of 95 watt, and that the top processor you could install in your desktop is the i7-6700K.

However, according to: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/Z170.html, your motherboard should be compatible with 7th gen Intel processors too, all the way up to the i7-7700K, which has a 91 watt TDP.

However, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to draw the line just above the i7-7700(K) as being ineligible for Windows 11 upgrading.  That shouldn't stop you though, from upgrading your desktop to run W11.

There are a number of inventive, safe, and reliable methods to achieve that, as I have done on all but one of my 3rd to 7th gen Intel-processor based PCs:

2.) (606) Upgrade Windows 11 to 22H2 on unsupported hardware - YouTube

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Hi, @Dustin22

I have used this simple method successfully to do an in-place upgrade to W11 22H2

See the discussion below...

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Issues-upgrading-to-windows-11...

You can also clean install W11 22H2 using the same media you created with the Rufus utility I attached in the discussion.

That was the last Rufus utility that had the feature to bypass the W11 hardware checks.

If you choose to clean install W11, when you get past the 'Install Now' screen, you will be asked what version of W11 you want to install.  Select the version of W10 that you installed.

Then you will be asked to enter a product key.

Select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W11 will install and activate after you are connected to the internet.

Note:  When you now clean install W11 it requires you to have an internet connection and a Microsoft account to continue with the setup process.

If you use a local account like I do, you can create one afterward.
