OMEN by HP 25L Gaming Desktop PC GT15-0000a (4Q9S1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

On every online game i play, i have this packet loss issue where every 30-40 seconds i get severe packet loss which causes my frames to slightly decrease and my ping to rapidly increase to about 150-200. Admittedly it lasts for about 5 seconds but thats enough to make online shooters or any game in fact pretty much unplayable. None of the videos on youtube seem to have my problem. The computer is fine at running the games at high fps which leaves me wondering how this could be fixed.

Hi @jakanavatar

No problem with your response time.

Your PC is reasonably close to the WIFI router but the Boiler could be an issue.

I don't know if a WIFI extender would solve your problem.

Try an extender to see how it goes. Place the extender so it avoids a direct path between the WIFI router and the Boiler.

Consider trying an Ethernet Powerline adapter referenced in my previous response if the extender does not work. You use the power lines in your home to move data over Ethernet from the router to your PC.

Or you could try a Mesh setup using two routers if your current router supports this. You would have to buy a second compatible router to do this.

Hi @jakanavatar

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I can only suggest possible causes. It could be a:

Network driver problem.

Router problem.

ISP problem.

HP has some W11, 22H2, network drivers (Ethernet and WIFI) for your PC at this Site.

Maybe your router can't deliver consistent data throughput if you are using WIFI.

You have an ISP problem. Check your ISP's typical ping times using Speedtest.

Could be a host problem. Check the game Forums for intermittent packet loss and high ping times.

Tried the network drivers, they dont seem to of fixed anything. Router problems seem negligable because the only device experiencing this is mine. ISP problem, when i did the speed test it all looked normal and acceptable. Host problem? i dont quite know what that really means or what to do about it. Still dont know how to fix this.

Hi @jakanavatar

I get about 950 Mbps down, 57 Mbps up, and a 30 ms ping over Ethernet when pinging other ISP's close to my service provider. Distance to a remote sever and other factors could degrade network performance.

Are you gaming over WIFI or Ethernet? Ethernet is generally better for gaming; lower latency and faster data throughput.

Router quality would affect WIFI gaming.

The Host means the gaming server. This is why I suggested checking some of the Forums devoted to games you play for users having similar network problems and possible solutions.

hi bill

Im getting 50mbps down and 30 mbps up on the speed test (im not smart enough to know the significance of these values on my problem).

I play on WIFI because i dont have ethernet ports in my room or anywhere in my house really. i know ethernet provides a good gaming experience which is why before i made this post i was looking at WIFI extenders that had ethernet ports in them. If you would think that would 100% solve my problem, that would be my last resort to fixing this. Also on my xbox, for example, my wifi connection is immaculate.

Ive checked my games forums and alot of them just have the same pattern of 'I only experience this amount of packet loss on this game and none others', which isnt really very helpful as i experience it on every game.

Also i did this thing on command prompt where you can see the ping of a webiste ( i used google.com) and i could see the pattern happening there aswell. (30ms then 40 seconds later 150ms then back to 30).

Hi @jakanavatar

50 Mbps down with 30 Mbps up over WIFI should be enough to casually play online games.

The intermittent 150 ms ping times are not good. So, either the ISP is dropping the ball, or your Router over WIFI is the problem, or the PC's WIFI card is at fault.

You must have a Router somewhere in the house. The Router would have ethernet connections.

Try the PC over Ethernet, if any way possible, to check internet speed and latency. Try the PC over WIFI when the PC is closer to the Router. A WIFI extender may not help.

I have used  Ethernet Powerline Adapters when you you are stuck with poor WIFI reception. This option may not help if your ISP is at fault. You might still see high ping times.

hi bill,

sorry for taking longer to reply ive been trying different things.

it turns out my problem is embarissingly simple and its just a distance problem. i put my pc next to the router and no packet loss happened and of course with immaculate ping. However, i cannot have my computer near my router at all times due to my own reasons. I think its appropriate to now ask if a wifi extender would help me?

Side note but i also think its a little bit weird because the room with the wifi in is the room 7 metres away from the wifi and it causes packet loss. ive tried moving my pc to the closest to the wifi place in my room and it still happens. I dont know if its because of just the computer having awful range or an external factor, for example my boiler is imbetween my computer and the wifi.
