This desktop stopped working and I suspect it is the power supply that has failed. I would like to order a new one and want to make sure I get one that is compatible. I was told at the repair shop that these towers run on a proprietary power supply and they couldn't use one on hand to check it out. What part number should I order for this?

Greetings @jeninoly
Welcome to the HP Forum.
I am surprised the repair shop did not test your PC's: graphics card (if applicable), memory, and CPU in a minimum configuration using a known good MB and a known good power supply. This would narrow down the problem HP component to the power supply or the MB.
A faulty storage device can also cause PC POST problems.
There is no way, without verifying all the other components installed in your PC work, to conclude the power supply has failed.
You would have to provide a specific HP PC product number or get the HP part number listed on the power supply installed in your PC.
Someone in the Forum can direct you to a replacement power supply at eBay using the HP PC product number.
Or you can shop for a replacement HP power supply at eBay after you ID the power supply part number.

yeah Dell desktops can be a bit picky with power supplies. If it's a proprietary model, you'll probably need to get the exact match. Do you know the model number of your desktop? That would help narrow down the correct PSU part number.

Greetings @jeninoly
Thanks for the info.
It looks like your PC has a HP 180 watt power supply. I don't have this part number.
You would have to check the installed HP power supply for a part number.
The HP 310 watt SFF PSU, Part number L03980-800, would work with your PC's: case and MB.
You should be able to purchase the 310 watt power supply at eBay. Find a reputable eBay seller offering returns and a full refund.
