The failure of the Intel Chipset Installation Utility typically occurs due to:

  • Corrupt or outdated chipset drivers
  • Windows update conflicts
  • Incomplete previous installations
  • Incorrect driver version for the hardware
  • System file or service issues
Troubleshooting Steps

Verify System Compatibility
  • Confirm your exact OMEN model (e.g., 15-dc0xxx variant)
  • Download chipset driver only from:
    • HP Support website (recommended)
    • Intel official site (fallback)

Installing a mismatched chipset driver (even slightly different version) can cause update failure because chipset drivers are tightly tied to motherboard architecture.

Run Installer as Administrator
  • Right-click the Intel installer → Run as administrator

Chipset installations modify low-level system components and registry entries. Without admin privileges, installation may fail silently or partially.

Uninstall Previous/Corrupted Chipset Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand:
    • System Devices
  3. Note Intel chipset components (optional)
  4. Then:
    • Go to Apps & Features
    • Uninstall:
      • Intel Chipset Device Software (if present)

Corrupted or partially installed drivers can block new installations due to version conflicts or locked files.

Clean Temporary Files

  • Press Win + R → type %temp% → delete all files
  • Also run Disk Cleanup

Installer extracts files to temp directories. Corruption or leftover files can interrupt installation processes.

Perform Clean Boot

  1. Press Win + R → type msconfig
  2. Under Services:
    • Check Hide Microsoft services
    • Click Disable all
  3. Go to Startup → Task Manager
    • Disable all startup items
  4. Restart system and retry install

Third-party applications (antivirus, monitoring tools, OEM utilities) may interfere with driver installation.

Install Driver Manually (INF Method)

  1. Extract the Intel chipset driver package
  2. Open Device Manager
  3. Right-click devices under System Devices
  4. Select: → Update DriverBrowse my computer → Point to extracted folder

The Intel utility sometimes skips installation if it thinks drivers already exist. Manual INF install forces proper driver registration.

Use Intel Driver & Support Assistant (IDSA)

  • Install and run Intel Driver & Support Assistant
  • Let it scan and install chipset drivers

Automatically detects compatible drivers and avoids manual selection errors.

Check Windows Update Services

  1. Press  Win + R → type services.msc
  2. Ensure these are running:
    • Windows Update
    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  3. Restart them if needed

Chipset installs often rely on Windows components. Disabled services can cause installation failure.

Run System File Checker (SFC)

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run: sfc /scannow
  • (Optional follow-up): DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Corrupted system files can prevent driver updates or installation scripts from executing correctly.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update
  • Install all pending updates

Some chipset drivers depend on specific Windows patches or frameworks to install correctly.

Temporarily Disable Antivirus

  • Disable antivirus/Windows Defender temporarily during installation

Security software may block driver installation due to low-level system access behavior.

Update BIOS (Advanced Step)

  • Visit HP support for your model
  • Install latest BIOS update (if outdated)

Older BIOS versions may not properly support newer chipset drivers, leading to failed updates.
