Hello! I have a problem where my laptop, a 2023 HP Omen 17, freezes and crashes soon after being plugged into power. Furthermore, my graphics card, an RTX 4060, also reports a code 43 in the device manager and won’t let me update its drivers. The only way I can boot my laptop properly is without the charging cable. Please help!

@ty_zoo, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You're dealing with a serious issue that seems to involve both power delivery and GPU functionality. Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting plan for your 2023 HP Omen 17 with RTX 4060:

Boot into Safe Mode with AC Plugged In

  • Plug in your charger.
  • Boot into Safe Mode:
  • Hold Shift while clicking Restart.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Press F4 to start in Safe Mode.
  • If it boots fine, the issue is likely driver-related, not hardware.

Check for Windows & BIOS Updates

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all updates.
  • Then, update your BIOS:
  • Visit HP Support  and enter your product number.
  • Download the latest BIOS and firmware (especially EC firmware or power controller updates).
  • Install the updates with the charger plugged in if possible.

Disable Fast Startup (Optional)

Sometimes fast startup interferes with GPU/ACPI init on AC:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what power buttons do > Change settings...
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save and reboot.

Test AC Adapter and Charging Port

  • Check the wattage rating on the adapter. The HP Omen 17 RTX 4060 should have at least a 230W charger.
  • If you have access to another HP-compatible charger, test with that. A failing or low-power charger can cause instability.

Reset BIOS and EC (Embedded Controller)

This helps with power state bugs:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Unplug power, then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Now, boot into BIOS (F10 at startup).
  • Press F9 to reset BIOS to defaults, then F10 to save and exit.

Disable Hybrid Graphics (for testing)

If your BIOS has an option:

  • Boot into BIOS (F10).
  • Look for a setting like Hybrid Graphics, Switchable Graphics, or MUX Switch.
  • Try setting it to Discrete Only (for NVIDIA only).
  • Save and test with the charger plugged in.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, none of this still works. Laptop boots up fine but the GPU still reports a Code 43. Installing drivers don't do anything.
