If your HP laptop's battery charges only when the device is turned off, it might be due to several reasons.

Here are some troubleshooting steps and tips that should help resolve the issue:

  1. Check AC Adapter: Ensure that the AC adapter is functioning correctly. If the power light turns on when the laptop is plugged in without the battery, the AC adapter is likely working fine. However, if the light remains off, consider replacing the adapter.

  2. Power Settings: Verify that the power settings are not limiting the charging of the battery while the laptop is on. Access the Power Options in the Control Panel to check and change settings if needed.

  3. Battery Health: Consider checking the health and condition of the battery. Over time, batteries may lose their ability to hold a charge effectively. You can check battery health through the HP Support Assistant software.

  4. Reset Power Management: Sometimes, resetting the power management can help:

    • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery.
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the battery and AC adapter and check if the issue persists.

  5. BIOS Update: Ensure that your laptop's BIOS is updated, as outdated BIOS versions may cause battery interface issues.

  6. Hardware Check: Inspect the power connector on the laptop for any visible damage or malfunction, and if that seems fine, click here to run the calibration and to your notebook's battery
