OMEN by HP - 17-an107na

6 or 7 of my laptop keys randomly stop working at the same time.

I've followed the procedures online, lifted the keys and cleaned them etc, reset the laptop, reinstalled the laptop, went with new browsers, performed a rain dance and sacrificed a goat...nothing.

It's the keys "G, ENTER, DELETE & QUESTION MARK" and a couple  of others so far.

Also, Windows 11 for the last few months automatically tries to Install updates that constantly fail. Again, stopped it updating in registery, reset laptop, followed online advice, raindance..goat.....and again, nothing. I have to sit through the laptops 30 minute attempts to Install, fail, roll back update nonsense.

Any advice would be great 😊

Hi @Gavomen17,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're encountering two separate issues with your OMEN by HP laptop: some keys randomly stop working, and you're having trouble with a Windows 11 update. Let's address both of these problems separately.

1. Keyboard Keys Randomly Stop Working.

  • Hardware Issue: If keys on your laptop's keyboard are randomly not working, it could be due to a hardware problem. First, try cleaning your keyboard carefully to remove any debris or dust that might be obstructing the keys. Use compressed air or a can of compressed air to blow out any dirt or particles. Make sure there's no liquid or spills on the keyboard.
  • Driver Issue: Sometimes, keyboard issues can be caused by outdated or corrupt keyboard drivers. To update your keyboard drivers, follow these steps:
    1. Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
    2. Expand the "Keyboards" section, right-click on your keyboard, and select "Update driver."
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to search for and install driver updates.
  • Check for Physical Damage: If cleaning and driver updates don't resolve the issue, check for physical damage to the keyboard. If there is physical damage, you may need to replace the keyboard.

2. Windows 11 Update Fails.

  • Check for Compatibility: Make sure your OMEN laptop meets the system requirements for Windows 11. Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements, and if your laptop doesn't meet them, the update might fail.
  • Update Windows 10 First: If you haven't already, ensure that your laptop is running the latest version of Windows 10. Some updates require that you're on the latest version of the previous OS before you can upgrade to the next one.
  • Troubleshoot Update Issues: If the Windows 11 update keeps failing, use the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter. Here's how:
    1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    2. Select "Windows Update" and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.
  • Download and Install Manually: If the automatic update fails, you can download the Windows 11 installation tool from the official Microsoft website and create a bootable USB drive to manually install Windows 11.
  • Check for Error Messages: If you receive any error messages during the update process, note them down as they can provide valuable information for troubleshooting. You can then search for specific solutions based on those error messages.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi. Thanks for the reply but the reply seems very automated?

I stated in my post that the keyboard was cleaned and the keys lifted etc so as to eliminate bot replies or automated suggestions that plague most peoples lives in other scenarios on a daily basis.

Drivers were uninstall, reinstalled as was Windows for both issues.

If I could roll back Windows 11 to Windows 10, that would solve 1 issue but of course, Microsoft won't make that easy and put a time limit on things and they also.dont let us cancel all updates either to avoid the problem. They would rather have us sit through hours of failed attempts when our only computers are put of service until the failed update routines complete.

I've read about lots of other people.with unresolved Omen laptop key issues in other forums so I assume you know about it.

Is it a new laptop i need or keyboard replacement? Is it worth replacing and at what cost since laptops are always more expensive? How much does HP charge for it etc?

As for windows, it was upgraded from Windows 10
