Microsoft Windows 11

Hey everyone,

Hoping someone here can help me with a really strange issue I'm having on my HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop. My son and I love playing Among Us, but recently it's become very frustrating.

The Problem:

The game runs perfectly smooth most of the time. However, whenever the game assigns my son the Imposter role, the screen stutters badly for a few seconds right after the "Imposter" text shows up. It sometimes freezes for a moment, and by the time it recovers, he's already missed the critical first few seconds of the round.

It's a frustrating among us always imposter issue because it only happens when he's the imposter. When he's a crewmate, it's flawless. He says it feels like the laptop is punishing him for getting the best role!

What I've Tried:

  • Updated the NVIDIA graphics drivers through GeForce Experience.
  • Updated Windows 11 to the latest version.
  • Checked for updates in the HP Support Assistant. Everything is current.
  • Lowered the in-game graphics settings (though it shouldn't be necessary for Among Us).

My Question & A Possible Clue:

We use a specific version of the game that all his friends use. It's been working perfectly for months, and they love it because it has some extra fun customization options. I'm starting to wonder if a recent HP or Windows update is now conflicting with it.

I'm being completely open here in case it helps troubleshoot. This is the version we are all playing, everyone has a blast with it: https://modhello.com/among-us/

Has anyone else experienced a game-specific stutter like this? Could it be an issue with the HP Omen Gaming Hub software trying to "optimize" the game and causing a conflict? Is there a setting I should turn off?

It's a great little laptop, and I just want to get this sorted so we can go back to enjoying our game nights.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks, A concerned Dad

@himekiwi, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

You mentioned you're using a custom version of Among Us from modhello.com. While it's great for gameplay enhancements, this kind of modification often bypasses normal game optimization routines, meaning your system (especially pre-installed HP software like Omen Gaming Hub or Windows Defender) might treat it as a suspicious or high-resource app when the Imposter role triggers additional animations or scripts.

What’s likely happening is that the modded game’s Imposter scripts trigger additional CPU or GPU load, and the HP Omen software or Defender doesn’t like it — briefly causing a stall. This kind of stutter is often misdiagnosed as hardware lag, but it's really a conflict between game scripts and system protection or performance tuning tools.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
