Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Microsoft Windows 11

I've posted this on other sites before, I'm sorry for sounding so ignorant but I'm still confused on what to do.

I bought a HP Victus 15 about a week ago with a 70hw battery. In the first day, I noticed it had come with a 5% battery wear level. Eventually, I managed to get it up to 2% through calibration, but 2 days later, it went back to 3,7% and by the end of the same day, it had a 8,5% wear level.

It sits now at 3,8%. The laptop has had 14 cycles in total and all of those battery results have been checked through HWinfo, HP's system, cmd battery reports, I even disabled HP adaptative battery for a moment, so I know all these levels are somewhat accurate...

Is this normal for a new laptop? I'm having a hard time understanding this flunctuation in battery wear level. Is it possible to get it back to 0% wear level? Calibrating the battery helps at times, but sometimes it has made it worse (8,5%)... why is that? Please help me? Is there a need for me to replace/fix this laptop?

Hi @Helena401

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concern about the fluctuating battery wear levels on your new HP Victus 15. It's not uncommon for new batteries to show some initial wear and fluctuations as they settle in. Here are a few points to consider:

Battery Wear Levels: It's normal for new batteries to show some wear initially. The wear level can fluctuate due to various factors, including usage patterns, charging habits, and even the software used to measure it.

Calibration: Battery calibration can help improve the accuracy of the battery wear level readings. However, it's not unusual for the wear level to fluctuate even after calibration. This is because calibration helps the system better estimate the battery's capacity, but it doesn't change the actual wear

Software Accuracy: Different software tools might report slightly different wear levels. It's good that you've cross-checked with multiple tools, but minor discrepancies are expected.

Battery Health: A wear level of around 3-5% is generally acceptable for a new battery. If the wear level stabilizes around this range, it's not a cause for concern.

Here are some steps you can take to ensure your battery remains healthy:

  • Avoid Deep Discharges: Try not to let your battery drain completely before recharging.
  • Keep it Cool: Avoid exposing your laptop to high temperatures, as heat can accelerate battery wear.
  • Regular Calibration: Perform battery calibration every few months to maintain accurate readings.
