HP Pavilion CX0001NA

Processor: Intel I5-8300H Quad Core @2.3ghz (Turbo Boost to 3.1ghz)

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX GeForce 1050

I purchased this laptop less than a month ago and while playing games like Left 4 Dead 2, which should run perfectly well (as it is nowhere near a new game), I have noticed that my CPU has reached up to 99c and my GPU has hit 97c, surely this is not safe and is not right? The room I use it in is rarely ever more than 20c and it is always well ventilated around the laptop, and also by the back door (which is usually open).

For the moment I have changed the maximum processor state to 99% to disable Turbo Boost (which drops the temperature by about 30% when playing L4D2 for 10 minutes because it was reaching 92% during loading screens after 10mins) but what is the point of having a laptop that can run faster, if I cannot get it to run faster without the risk of damaging components?

Can anyone help? (I have insurance on this laptop, just in case)

I'd rather not go messing around in the BIOS (just in case), but my CPU runs every game I have at 30+fps often at a stable 60) while at 99% processor performance anyway (some are obviously a lot higher, but I usually play with the VSync on as my monitor is only 60hz) and as a former console player I'm perfectly happy with that. So I'd much rather just lose the 1% processor performance and disable the turbo boost from settings if it's going to mean that my CPU dies later rather than sooner.

EDIT: How do I remove this as a solution? I didn't mean to select this as an answer. Anyway thank you for all your help but I won't mess with my settings any further than I already have.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Flower_Bud is at your service.

As I understand, your PC heats up while playing the game,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Does this happen while playing this particular game or other games too?

How are you checking the temperature of the notebook?

Is your notebook performing slow?

While you respond to that, you could try these steps mentioned in the article: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01657439

Step 4: Using HP CoolSense technology

Step 5: Updating the BIOS

Step 6: Testing for hardware failure

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers!

Yes it happens while playing other games.

I'm checking the temp with HWMonitor.

No it isn't performing slow.

It's been happening since I purchased the laptop 2and a half weeks ago, I'm not opening it as this will void the warranty. I have no cooler room and there is enough ventilation on all sides, placed on a hard & flat surface.

HP Coolsense is switched to on (and has been since I ran setup).

BIOS updated about a week ago and no improvement, I cannot access any HP website about updates to BIOS as I'm getting 'information not found/page not found' on all devices (including my phone).

How do I check if I need to update BIOS and how do I run a hardware check?

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Try restoring the BIOS to default and check if it helps.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try updating the Intel Management Engine Interface Driver and graphics driver from the links below and check if it helps.

Update the Intel Management Engine Interface Driver using this link. Click Here

Also, update the NVIDIA graphics driver using this link. Click Here

You can try updating other drivers on your PC using HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using the HP support assistant.

Try performing the following troubleshooting steps:

1 - Right-click on any open space on your computer's taskbar.

2 -Select "Task Manager" and press "Enter."

3 -Select "View" from the Taskbar Manager's pull-down menu. If more than one computer is connected to your network, notice the graphs for all CPUs. Select "One Graph Per CPU." This will help determine which computers are using more processing time.

4 -Go to the "Applications" tab. Because this tab shows open programs in real time, you will be able to see exactly when a program has been opened and closed at the time that it occurs. Identify and close selected programs by highlighting each one separately and clicking on "End Task" to free up processing time. (Important: Make sure all work is saved prior to closing any programs.)

5 -Go to the "Processes" tab and view them, but do not delete any of them unless absolutely necessary. All of the hidden system processes and programs are listed here. (Note: See Warnings section.)

Also, Hit Win Key + R
Type in “Regedit” and then hit Enter.
Go to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management’
Find ‘ClearPageFileAtShutDown’ and change its value to 1
Restart the computer

Run system test:

  • Press the Power button to turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until you see HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • From the UEFI main menu, click System Tests, then click Quick Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen. The test can take up to 15 minutes.
  • If no system component failed, please go back to main menu and Exit from the screen

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers!

Ran a System Test which all passed.

I already updated my NVIDIA graphics driver, it is the most recent version and this was happening prior to this driver update.

Without knowing if the BIOS update Insyde F.10, (07/08/18) has any relevence I really don't want to go messing around with the BIOS nor do I want to edit my Registry without knowing exactly why I'm doing it. I'm extremely hesitant to try either of those two options as this is a brand new laptop and it was very expensive, also as you can probably tell I'm new to current PC's operating systems. So if the update was to fix a cpu problem I would have no idea where to start to update the BIOS again.

I'm also having an issue checking BIOS, there is no hardware monitor available for me to check and the only advice I can find is to reinstall the BIOS, unfortunately I keep getting a 'page not found/information not found' when I check the HP website for updates (ANY UPDATES). I cannot install or even look at any at all.

EDIT: I downloaded Intel XTU (not messing with the tuning stuff, read ONLY) and after 5 minutes at 99-100% CPU Utilisation my max Package Temp was 92c (HWMonitor showed me the same), though the average was 72c, is this normal? And I've been worrying for nothing?

Also like I mentioned above my BIOS has no hardware monitor and what I've been able to find out I should reinstall the update or should I just leave it and wait for a relevent update because HP can't find the page information for my specific laptop (perhaps it is too new or there was only the one available?)

The temperature issue seems to be related to ambient temperature and whether or not the AC adapter is connected, the temperature which to be honest wasn't really that high (around 18-20c) but idle temp in a room that is around 11c (but below 18c) seems to be about 27-38c (ON BATTERY) instead of 45c (ON AC ADAPTER). I think I'm going to have to invest in an exterior laptop cooler. As for the BIOS issue (no hardware monitor in BIOS), I'm not sure what to do about it.

Perhaps it's because my CPU has Turbo Boost technology and can overclock from 2.3ghz to about 4ghz without me needing to adjust any settings, could this be the cause of the temperature issue? I know the max temp (TJunction) is 100c for this particular processor, but is that when the processor starts to throttle speed or when a complete shutdown occurs?

Does your notebook overheat?

Is it warm to the touch?

BIOS update is something which takes care of the hardware component of your notebook. To find which version of BIOS is installed on your computer,

Click on start > Type msinfo32 (in the search box) > Click on system Information > It will provide you the version installed on your notebook.

If the BIOS is not updated, I would recommend you install the latest version.

The software you're using to track the CPU performance and temperature seems to be a Third party software.

Note: HP does not recommend using a third-party software since we have not tested it on our notebooks.

Keep me posted,

Cheers!

To answer your questions, yes and yes.

Unfortunately for some reason BIOS has no option for hardware monitor so I have no choice but to use a 3rd party software, I cannot update the official BIOS from the official HP BIOS website as I am getting a 'page not found/information not found' error (even from my mobile phone).

What you're saying is I have no chance at figuring out if my notebooks CPU is in fact overheating because I cannot check Hardware Monitor in BIOS and I'm not updating with a BIOS Update that isn't from the official HP website.

Are you able to visit other websites on your notebook?

Does your notebook overheat?

Is it warm to the touch?

Could you provide me with the BIOS version installed on your computer?

Let me know,

Cheers!
