Hello, for a while my pc has suddenly crashed and a few days ago I noticed that some of my CPU's cores are running hotter than the rest. Any advice to solve this. I replaced the thermal paste in June and it didn't show any signs of this at the time. It was my first time applying thermal paste so that might have something to do with the current issues. Thanks in advance.

If you've recently replaced the thermal paste and are experiencing sudden crashes with some CPU cores running hotter than others, there are a few things you can check and try to resolve the issue.

 

  • Reapply Thermal Paste: Since you mentioned that it was your first time applying thermal paste, it's possible that there was an issue with the application. Make sure that you applied the right amount and spread it evenly across the CPU. If you suspect any mistakes in the application, consider reapplying the thermal paste.
  • Check Cooling System: Ensure that the cooling system, including fans and heat sinks, is functioning correctly. Dust accumulation can hinder proper airflow and cooling. Clean the fans and vents to ensure optimal cooling.
  • Update BIOS/UEFI: Check if there are any updates for your laptop's BIOS/UEFI firmware. HP often release updates to improve system stability and thermal management. Be cautious when updating firmware, and follow the HP instructions.
  • Check Power Settings: Make sure that your power settings are appropriately configured. Sometimes, aggressive power-saving settings can impact the performance and cooling of the CPU. Adjust the power plan to a balanced or performance mode.
  • Monitor CPU Usage: Use task manager or a third-party tool to monitor CPU usage. Identify if any specific applications or processes are causing excessive CPU load. This can help you pinpoint the source of the overheating.
  • Run Diagnostic Tools: Some laptops come with built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware issues. Check if your laptop has such tools, and run diagnostics to check for any hardware problems.
  • Check for Background Processes: Ensure that there are no unnecessary background processes or applications consuming CPU resources. Close any unnecessary programs running in the background.

 

Remember to take necessary precautions, such as grounding yourself to prevent static electricity, when working with internal components of your laptop.
