Hello, I have an issue with the Caps Lock indicator. The key itself works, but the light doesn’t turn on. Sometimes it blinks in a cycle (I counted around 60 times). The laptop itself functions normally. The model is HP pavilion gaming 15-dk0164TX. Recently (a month ago), I replaced my old Toshiba 1TB 5400rpm HDD (due to bad sectors) with a new WD Black 1TB 7200rpm HDD.

The issue you are facing with the Caps Lock indicator light not turning on or blinking could be related to several potential factors:

 

Loose Connection of Recently Added Hardware: Since you recently replaced the old HDD with a new one, it's possible that this caused some loose connections:

  • Check if the connection to the new HDD is secure.
  • Ensure that the cables and connectors are properly seated.

Faulty Components: Blinking lights often indicate a problem with the basic functionality of a critical component, such as the processor, BIOS, memory, or graphics cards. Here are steps to troubleshoot:

  • Blinking Lights Pattern: Identify the blink pattern and refer to the HP troubleshooting guide for corrective actions. For example, count the number of blinks in a sequence followed by a pause.
  • Reseat Memory: If internal hardware components (like memory) have been recently added or removed, reseat these components, as they might not be connected properly.
  • Diagnostics Tool: Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tool to test the suspected components.

Diagnostic Error Messages: Diagnostic error messages might indicate problems that can be resolved by updating firmware for the components. Follow these steps:

  • Check for and install updated firmware for your BIOS and other hardware components using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
  • Restore hardware to its original condition (e.g., bootable solid-state drive instead of the changed hard drive).
  • Reseat suspected components and verify connections.

Status Lights and Error Messages:

  • Refer to the laptop’s service manual for guidance on the blinking light codes.
  • These codes might give a clue about what component might be malfunctioning.
