@5CD327D0JC, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with your HP Victus gaming laptop related to the battery's charging and discharging. This can be due to several reasons such as software glitches, battery calibration issues, or even a faulty battery. Below are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to address these problems:

Check the Power Supply and Charging Cable

  • Inspect the charger: Ensure that the charging cable and adapter are functioning correctly. Check for any visible damage or fraying. Try using a different charger, if possible, to rule out a defective charger.
  • Test the charging port: Look for any dirt, dust, or debris in the laptop's charging port that could interfere with the charging process.

Battery Calibration

Sometimes the laptop's battery indicator may get out of sync, causing inaccurate readings.

  • Full charge/discharge cycle:
    1. Charge the laptop to 100%.
    2. Disconnect it and allow it to discharge completely (let it run until it shuts off).
    3. Then, charge it back to 100% again.
  • This will help recalibrate the battery sensor and may fix the incorrect percentage readings.

Update Battery Drivers and BIOS

  • Update drivers: Outdated or corrupted battery drivers can cause charging and battery issues.
    1. Press Windows + X, then select Device Manager.
    2. Expand the Batteries section.
    3. Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Update Driver.
    4. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the instructions.
  • Update BIOS:
    1. Visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number (HP Victus).
    2. Go to the Drivers & Downloads section and check if there’s a BIOS update available.
    3. Download and install it following the on-screen instructions.

Check for Software Conflicts

  • Task Manager: Sometimes, background processes can interfere with battery behavior.
    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Look for any apps or processes consuming excessive power. End those processes if unnecessary.
  • Battery Saver Settings: Make sure you’re not running a Battery Saver mode which might be causing inaccurate percentage readings.

Perform a Power Reset

A hard reset can sometimes clear up minor issues that might be causing the charging or battery issue.

  1. Shut down the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter.
  3. Remove the battery (if possible).
  4. Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  5. Reinstall the battery, connect the power adapter, and power on the laptop.

Check Battery Health Using HP Support Assistant

  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to the Battery section to see the health of your battery.
  • If the battery health shows "Replace Soon" or something similar, your battery may be deteriorating and might need replacement.

Test Battery in BIOS

You can test the battery’s health directly from the BIOS:

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc or F10 to enter the BIOS settings.
  3. Look for the Battery Health option (in some versions, it may be under System Information).
  4. Check if the battery status is reported as "Good" or "Fair." If it's "Replace" or "Critical," then your battery may need replacement.

Check Windows Battery Settings

Windows has settings that might be affecting your battery’s performance.

  • Power & Sleep Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
    2. Check for any power-saving settings that might interfere with charging or battery life.

Run HP Diagnostic Tests

  • HP laptops come with a built-in diagnostic tool. To run it:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F2 during startup to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    2. Run the Battery Test to check for any battery-related issues.

Reinstall Battery Driver

If the battery driver is corrupted, reinstalling it can help.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under Batteries, and click Uninstall Device.
  3. Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Test the Battery in Safe Mode

Sometimes, third-party software can cause issues with battery performance.

  • Boot the laptop in Safe Mode:
    1. Press Shift + Restart to enter recovery options.
    2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    3. Press 4 to enter Safe Mode.
  • Check if the battery issue persists in Safe Mode. If it doesn’t, then the problem could be related to installed software or drivers.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

It could be a battery calibration issue or a faulty battery. Have you tried recalibrating the battery or checking for a firmware update?
