Hi, my computer is stuck on a black screen. I left it charging last night and I haven’t dropped it or anything but no button I press has caused any reaction. There’s no buttons glowing or any noises being made by it either

Hi @Willproblem92,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your computer is stuck on a black screen and shows no signs of power or activity, it could be due to a variety of issues, ranging from power supply problems to internal hardware failures. Here’s a detailed troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the issue:
1. Check Power Supply
Verify Power Source:
- Ensure that the power adapter is plugged into both the computer and a working electrical outlet.
- If you're using a laptop, try using a different power outlet or adapter if available.
Inspect Power Adapter and Cable:
- Check the power adapter and cable for any visible damage or fraying.
- If possible, test with another compatible power adapter.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
For Laptops:
- Power Off: If the laptop is on, press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until it powers off.
- Disconnect Power: Unplug the power adapter and, if possible, remove the battery.
- Drain Residual Power: Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to clear any residual power.
- Reconnect and Restart: Reinsert the battery, plug in the power adapter, and try turning on the laptop.
For Desktops:
- Power Off: Shut down the computer if it's on.
- Unplug Power Cable: Disconnect the power cable from the back of the computer.
- Drain Residual Power: Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds.
- Reconnect and Restart: Plug the power cable back in and power on the computer.
3. Check External Connections
Inspect Display:
- If you’re using a desktop, make sure the monitor is powered on and connected properly to the computer.
- Verify that the monitor's power cable is plugged in and that the monitor itself is functioning (you can test with another device).
Try an External Monitor:
- For laptops, connect to an external monitor or TV to check if the issue is with the laptop’s screen or the graphics card.
4. Listen for Beeps or Sounds
Check for Beep Codes:
- When powering on the computer, listen for any beep codes or sounds. These can indicate specific hardware issues. Refer to your computer’s manual or HP website for beep code meanings.
Look for LED Indicators:
- Check if there are any LED indicators or lights on the computer that might give a clue about its status.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
