Hi, i've had an issue with the Omen for many years.

After a bios update when i got my Omen, the screen always started dim. Brightness isn't working. I would then have to put the pc to sleep mode and immediately turn it on again....then everything is fine. When i plug it externally, its also fine. But when i just turn it on, its dim.

I've updated bios and graphics drivers throughout the years and nothing works.

Hi @Mythos23gr

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you've been dealing with a persistent and frustrating issue with your HP Omen.

Based on your description, the problem seems to be tied to how the system initializes the display during startup.

Here are some steps you can try to address this:

1. Reset BIOS Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly to access the Startup Menu.
  • Select F10 (BIOS Setup) and reset the BIOS to its default settings.
  • Save and exit, then check if the issue persists.

2. Check Adaptive Brightness

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness & Color.
  • Disable Change brightness automatically when lighting changes (if available).
  • Also, disable Night Light to rule out any interference.

3. Update or Roll Back Graphics Drivers

  • Open Device Manager and locate your display adapter.
  • Right-click and select Update Driver. If the issue persists, try rolling back to an earlier driver version.
  • Alternatively, download the latest driver directly from the GPU manufacturer (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD).

4. Disable Fast Startup

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save changes and restart your laptop.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off your laptop and unplug it from the power source.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the power and turn it on.

6. Test in BIOS

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (press F10 during startup).
  • Check if the screen is dim in the BIOS. If it is, the issue might be hardware-related.

7. External Monitor Behavior (Optional)

  • Since the display works fine when connected to an external monitor, this suggests the issue is isolated to the laptop's internal display or its initialization process.

Thank you for your time.

Reset Bios didn't work

Roll back to previous bios version doesn't work unless we can maybe go to the original bios when i bought it.

All the next bios versions didn't solve anything.

Adaptive brightness is unavailable..

I have unistalled and reinstall the graphics card and changed numerous drivers through the years.

Fast start up didn't work either

It sounds like you've been incredibly thorough in troubleshooting this dim screen issue—your persistence is commendable!

Since the usual fixes like BIOS resets, driver updates, and fast startup adjustments haven't worked, let's explore some additional steps that might help:

Advanced Troubleshooting Steps

Check Display Brightness Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display and manually adjust the brightness slider.
  • If the slider is unavailable, try accessing the brightness settings through the Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.

Test with an External Monitor:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI or VGA. If the external display works fine, the issue might be with the laptop's screen hardware or backlight.

Inspect Hardware Connections:

  • If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check the connections between the screen and the motherboard. Loose or damaged cables can cause dim screen issues.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power on the laptop.

Update or Reinstall Chipset Drivers:

  • Visit your laptop manufacturer's website and download the latest chipset drivers. These drivers manage communication between hardware components and could resolve display issues.

Check for Malware or Corrupted Files:

  • Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus program.
  • Use the System File Checker tool to repair corrupted files:sfc /scannow

Consider a System Recovery:

  • If the issue started after a recent update or change, use System Restore to revert your laptop to a previous state when the screen was functioning correctly.

Inspect Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select High Performance.
  • Ensure settings like Display brightness and Dim display after are configured appropriately.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
