Hi!
What do I have to do to enable USB C as a DisplayPort to use the GPU?
I have a HTC Vive Pro 2 and it doesn't detect the USB C cable adapter as a Displayport.
Thanks.

Hi @VansFannel, Welcome to HP Support Community!
We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊
You're on the right track trying to use the USB-C port on your HP OMEN 16-k0011ns to connect your HTC Vive Pro 2, which requires DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC (Display Stream Compression) for full resolution mode.
Good News:
Your laptop does support DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC via its Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. These ports are capable of high-bandwidth video output and are compatible with VR headsets like the Vive Pro 2.
Steps to Enable USB-C DisplayPort Output via NVIDIA GPU:
-
Check BIOS Settings:
- Reboot your laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing
EscorF10during startup). - Look for Graphics Switch or Advanced Optimus settings.
- Ensure "High resolution mode on USB-C DP alt mode dock" is enabled.
- Reboot your laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing
-
Use the Correct Cable:
- Use a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable that supports 32.4Gbps bandwidth (e.g., Cable Matters or similar).
- Make sure the cable is bidirectional and supports Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort.
-
Force NVIDIA GPU Usage:
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel → go to "Manage 3D Settings" → set Preferred GPU to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
- In Windows Graphics Settings (
Settings > System > Display > Graphics), assign the Vive Console app to use the NVIDIA GPU.
-
Verify Device Connection:
- In Device Manager, view devices by connection. If the Vive Pro 2 appears under Intel Iris Xe, it means the USB-C port is routed through the integrated GPU.
- Try switching to the other USB-C port or rechecking BIOS settings.
-
Troubleshoot Vive Console Error 210:
- This error usually means the headset isn’t receiving a valid DisplayPort signal.
- Ensure the USB-C cable is plugged into the port wired to the NVIDIA GPU.
- Restart the Vive Console and SteamVR after making changes.
Additional Notes:
- The OMEN 16-k0011ns uses Advanced Optimus, which dynamically switches between GPUs. Sometimes, external displays or VR headsets may default to the integrated GPU unless explicitly configured.
- You can test the port by connecting a 4K monitor and checking which GPU drives it using the NVIDIA Control Panel > Set PhysX Configuration.
