Hi @TTT077,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your Start screen is flickering and preventing programs from opening, it can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Restart Your Computer

  • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches.

2. Check for Windows Updates

  • Make sure your system is up to date:
    1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    2. Check for updates and install any available.

3. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Outdated or corrupt graphics drivers can cause display issues:
    1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Display adapters, right-click on your graphics card, and select Update driver.
    3. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

4. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  • Use the built-in troubleshooter to find and fix issues:
    1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
    2. Select Windows Store Apps and run the troubleshooter.

5. Disable Hardware Acceleration

  • If a specific app is causing the flickering, try disabling hardware acceleration:
    1. Open the app that’s flickering (if possible) and go to its settings.
    2. Look for an option to disable hardware acceleration.

6. Boot in Safe Mode

  • Booting in Safe Mode can help determine if the issue is caused by a third-party application:
    1. Hold down the Shift key and click Restart from the Start menu.
    2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    3. Press 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode. Check if the flickering persists.

7. Create a New User Profile

  • Sometimes user profiles can become corrupted:
    1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
    2. Click on Add someone else to this PC and create a new user account.
    3. Log into the new account and see if the issue occurs there.

8. Check for Corrupted System Files

  • Use the System File Checker to scan for and repair corrupted system files:
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for "cmd", right-click, and select Run as administrator).
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete.

9. Reset Windows

  • If the problem persists, you might consider resetting Windows as a last resort:
    1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
    2. Under Reset this PC, click Get started and follow the prompts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
