Hi HP Team,

I’m facing some unusual performance issues with my HP Pavilion Gaming notebook, and I’d appreciate any advice from the community.

I use this laptop not just for gaming, but also for game-related research, APK testing, and multitasking between browser tabs, game tools, and development platforms. One of my recent projects is Magic Brawl, an APK mod site that I manage and update regularly.

The issue:

Whenever I multitask — for example, switching between browser tabs, extracting APK files, editing lightweight images, or running background tools — my notebook begins to lag. The cursor sometimes freezes, and the fan starts spinning loudly even when usage isn’t too high. Surprisingly, this happens even when I’m **not gaming or doing anything graphics-heavy**.

I’ve already tried:

  • Updating BIOS and graphics drivers
  • Disabling background startup apps

Running diagnostics from HP Support Assistant

Monitoring temperature with OMEN Gaming Hub (seems okay)

Specs:

  •  HP Pavilion Gaming Notebook
  • AMD Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
  •  NVIDIA GTX 1650
  • Windows 11, fully updated

Could this be an optimization issue? Or perhaps background thermal throttling or disk usage spikes?

Would love to know if anyone else has experienced similar issues while running mixed workloads on HP gaming laptops — especially when dealing with light game modding or APK tools like I do magicbrawl

Thanks for any help..

Hi @MycleJackson245,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

  1. Check for Software and Driver Updates:

    • Make sure that your BIOS, software, applications, and drivers are up to date, as outdated versions can lead to decreased system performance.
    • Use Windows Update to install critical and optional software and driver updates. You can also visit HP's support site for specific driver updates.
  2. Monitor System Vitals with OMEN Command Center:

    • Utilize the System Vitals section in the OMEN Command Center to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures. This can help you identify any overheating issues.
    • Make sure that your notebook is operating within safe temperature ranges.
  3. Manage Running Applications:

    • Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting "Task Manager."
    • Navigate to the "Processes" tab and identify low-priority applications that are consuming excessive resources. Close these to free up your CPU and memory.
  4. Ensure Proper Ventilation:

    • Place your notebook on a hard, flat surface when using it to ensure proper airflow. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like blankets that can block ventilation.
    • Regularly clean your notebook's fans and vents to prevent dust buildup. This will help maintain optimal cooling efficiency.
  5. Update Game and System Software:

    • If you have games installed, ensure they are updated. Outdated game software can sometimes cause background issues that affect overall performance.
  6. Use HP Support Assistant:

    • Launch HP Support Assistant to perform a performance tune-up check, which can help identify and resolve system bottlenecks.
  7. Adjust Power Settings:

    • Check your power settings in Windows and ensure they are set for optimal performance, particularly when using the notebook for intensive tasks.

Check Task Manager for background processes (look for high disk usage from Windows Search, Antivirus, or updates). Disable unnecessary ones. Update chipset + AMD/NVIDIA drivers directly from AMD/NVIDIA sites (not only HP). Disable Windows Game Bar & Xbox services (they cause stutters outside gaming too). Set Power Plan to High Performance and disable CPU throttling in advanced settings. Check SSD health with tools like CrystalDiskInfo; slowdowns often come from background disk I/O. Undervolt or repaste CPU/GPU if fan noise + micro-freezes persist (thermal throttling). Run a clean boot (disable third-party startups) to confirm if it’s a software conflict. Likely cause: driver + background process conflicts, not hardware failure. Fix with clean drivers, high performance settings, and disabling hidden background tasks.
