OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-xf0000 (758R1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I am currently using an HP Omen 16-xf0087nr Laptop. It charges normally when powered off, but when I turn it on, it stops charging. When I plug it in while it is on, the laptop would charge randomly for a split second, then stop. I have updated the BIOS, made sure the laptop was up to date on everything, reset the computer, and used the HP Diagnostics tool, and it says the battery is fine.

Please let me know what steps I should take from here.

Thank you!

@jaackk, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing an issue where your HP Omen 16-xf0087nr only charges when powered off. You've already done a great job updating the BIOS, running diagnostics, and ensuring your system is up to date.

This issue is known to occur on some OMEN and Victus by HP Gaming Laptops due to a protective feature called "Incompatible Mode", which is triggered by improper insertion of the power adapter into the DC jack.

Here's how to resolve it:

Check the Adapter and Port

  • Inspect the adapter barrel connector and DC jack for any visible damage or debris.
  • Clean gently if needed using a soft brush or compressed air.

Reconnect the Adapter Properly

  • Insert the adapter smoothly and fully into the DC jack in one continuous motion.
  • Avoid pausing or wiggling during insertion, as this can trigger the EC protection mode.

Confirm Charging

  • Once connected, check for:
    • Charging icon in the taskbar.
    • Audible chime or on-screen notification.
  • You can also verify charging status under:
    • Settings > System > Power & Battery.

Test with Another Adapter (if available)

  • If possible, try using a different compatible HP charger to rule out adapter issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Jackk! I am having the same laptop with the same problem! Did you solve yours? How did you solve this problem? In my case, this issue occurs SOMETIMES. Randomly, it might start charging when the laptop is turned on or it will not charge at all but it will always charge when laptop is turned off. Same issue. Please reply

I thought it was silly at first, but I made sure the charger was in line with the port and plugged it in one continuous motion like Max said, and it worked.
