It was involuntarily shutting down when I'd close the game.
I cleaned the fans and now it doesn't shut down (I use a mesh ventilated pad also), but still runs up to 101 degree typically.
I read this is excessive and 80 degrees would be a preferrable range.
Am I correct in saying that?
Would sending it to the tech shop for a change of thermal paste be the correct course of action in this situation, or what does one do to manage this?

Hi @Omen16c0xxx,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
You're right — 101°C is too hot for sustained operation, even on a gaming laptop like your OMEN 16-c0000 (343L4AV).
Let’s break this down with clarity, and I'll give you both immediate steps and the best long-term strategy: 101°C is above the safe limit for most CPUs and GPUs. While modern chips will throttle or shut down to protect themselves, sustained high temps can reduce their lifespan.
1. Repaste the CPU/GPU
Yes — replacing the thermal paste is a smart move, especially if the laptop is 1–2+ years old. Factory-applied paste often degrades quickly.
- Use a high-quality thermal paste (e.g., Arctic MX-6, Noctua NT-H2)
- Have it done by a qualified technician if you're not comfortable opening the laptop
2. Undervolt the CPU (Optional)
- Tools like ThrottleStop (Intel) or Ryzen Controller (AMD) can reduce voltage and heat
- This requires care and testing, but can lower temps by 5–15°C
3. Update BIOS and Drivers
- HP sometimes releases thermal management updates via BIOS or firmware
- Visit: AMS Refurb (7F6H1U8) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
4. Adjust Performance Settings
- In OMEN Gaming Hub, switch to Balanced or Quiet mode when not gaming
- In Windows Power Settings, set to Best Power Efficiency when on battery
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
